Simplest way to make XP USB installer from original XP CD Installer
Apologies for the double post. Posting here, redirected me to the login screen which oddly redirected me to the Hello World area! smile.gif

I have been parsing this forum and the internet for a few days and I am extremely surprised by how convoluted and complicated and long all tutorials are. Some seems to be longer than novels.

So I have a very simple question? What is the simplest, easiest way to take my original Windows XP CD Installer and make a Windows XP USB Installer so that I can re-install XP on my netbook with the USB drive without the need to plug an external CD drive.

I am NOT looking for tutorials on multi boots and that kind of things. Just something very simple.

I have tried countless tutorials an tools with no success including FlashBoot, mkboot, uinetbootin, usb_prep8, etc.

So I confirm that my machine (HP Mini 1000) boots the US Stick without any problem.

What I have dony by myself so far:

1. Formatted (full format, not quick format) the USB drive with PeToUSB enablig LBA (FAT16X)
2. Used bootsec to make the drive bootable with bootsec /nt52 G:
3. Copied ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini from my current Windows XP install
4. Edited boot.ini to make sure it was booting correctly

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=10
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="XP Installer" /FASTDETECT
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Dummy just here to display the menu at boot" /FASTDETECT

So the USB boots but WindowsXP installer never starts. I tried to put rdisk(1) in the boot.ini entries without success.

What am I doing wrong or what am I not doing?

Thanks a lot for your help,

Cedrick
