Hi all (IMG:../forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) ,

The latest & last frontier!!!

Highly Illuminarti

If every person in the world was given 1/4 of an acre of land
The whole of the worlds population would fit into Australia
With the rest of the worlds land left over

Revelation Chapter 14 verses 16,17 & 18

Food for thought!

Hi all the linux & other OS's Clansmen/Ladies (IMG:../forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) ,

Background info:
I'm afraid I'm one of those dirty little windows users, wanting to try out linux & other stuff but have not ventured very far. So in an attempt to force the issue was thinking about how nice it would be to have a minimal OS that was portable that was capable of loading a VM. Sorry about my delivery but I tend to think in abstract terms!

So hunting around the WWW. I have been looking at MenuetOS which for the unintiated is an OS that is built in ASM/Assembler programming & as a consequence is very small & fast. Now MenuetOS has been used in conjunction with Qemu but requires knowledge of Coding or in techno jargon "Needs to be ported to MenuetOS" so it blew me outa the water in terms of loading Qemu onto MenuetOS. Another interesting proposal is a branch of MenuetOS called "Kolibri" written in FASM, another very small OS but no mention of whether a VM could be loaded onto it though. These would have been great to load a VM but Noone have done it!

By the by I have been using Portable VirtualBox VM & I have to say I am very impressed with it, "It does exactly what it says on the can" it can be run from Windows as well as Linux but I don't think it is portable for the Linux versions.

Anyway, so I turned my attention to Puppy Linux & DSL as a front loader for a VM but here again none have done it, it seems. So I have been looking again & another likely candidate, to do the deed & SLAX a cut down version of slackware that comes in a CD version & a USB version circa 180Mb seems favourable. Apparently with difficulty, you can load it onto a hard drive.

So basically my question is does anyone know of small OS's that could be capable of of Running a VM to load other whatever OS's within a portable framework?

Hi all (IMG:../forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) ,

Here's what I think is an intersting find?

Ever drop on a file or collection of files that you want to copy, that spits back an error message sumfin like "File in use" unable to copy which can be a bit of a nuisance!

I like the commandline quite a lot so this little gizmo is right up my alley & maybe up yours, well how do we achieve this then, "Copying locked files"?!
Since XP, Windows has supported a technology called Volume Shadow Copy, which is used to power the previous versions feature in Vista as well as System Restore and backups. What it does is take a temporary snapshot of the file or drive, and then allow an application to read from the snapshot even while other applications are accessing or modifying the file.

What we can do is use a command line utility called HoboCopy that utilizes this service to copy the file.

Well maybe just maybe it could be used to say back up your active registry why not give it a go & find out, an interesting topic for a homework project LOL?

And where can one find out details about this Gizmo:?

Try Here:

Noteably it is open source 2

There are dependancies of course but isn't there always, kinda looks nifty to me?

Tis also avaialable for Vista also

Addendum UMMmmm Maybe its the case that some people would prefer a Gui interface so as an alternative to HoboCopy what about this:

Maybe this would suffice

Hi all (IMG:../forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) ,

physdiskwrite only 44Kb's
This is a small Windows NT/2000/XP command line tool that makes it possible to write disk images onto raw disks, like CF cards. It currently has a few rough edges, most notably in the selection of the device to be written you have to decide which device is the right one by looking at the C/H/S values (though if the CF card was the last device to be connected to the system, it usually shows up as the last one in the list). Note that the C/H/S values may be incorrect for CF cards looks like this is a bug in Windows. There is some protection against accidentally overwriting your hard disk, but then again, I CAN'T TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOST DATA YOU USE THIS PROGRAM ON YOUR OWN RISK.
Note to Windows Vista users: physdiskwrite works with Vista, but you must make sure to run it as administrator (simply having admin rights isn't enough), or it won't find any disks. One way to do this is to create a shortcut to cmd.exe, then right-click it and select "run as administrator". Then you can launch physdiskwrite from the command prompt window that appears, and it should work fine.

physdiskwrite [-u] <image-file>

...or just simply drag-and-drop the image file onto the physdiskwrite.exe icon.

Here Ya go!

If You like it, use it, if not, skip it!

Hi all (IMG:../forums/style_emoticons/default/thumbup.gif) ,

Does anyone have any thoughts for the forthcoming new year,
in fact how did 2008 treat you,
did you get all that you expected for christmas?

Are we going to make any new years resolutions
& which way do you think Boot-Land will go in 2009.
This year we have moved to a new server with the obvious benefits, in this I salute you Nuno the old site was getting very difficult to access!

Any hatching plans for the future of Boot-Land?

Regards & Happy New Year to all Boot-Land Members,
