I read an article somewhere (not sure if it was here or not) about how to build a login device using a usb thumb drive. (without any software) I am unable to fine this article without using a 3rd party app.. The article I read was how to do this and edit the registry to some degree to allow this function.. Like a finger print reader.. I understand that if anyone should get this thumb drive it would be a huge security risk... I also saw a 3rd party app called Rohos logon key $25 to allow the thumb drive and a passcode to be used with that thumb drive.. neat idea.. Can this be done with free utilities or even better just tweaking the registry?

Thanks for the help

A nice thingie can be this one:
http://www.dansdata.com/pclock.htm
and a better software for it:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/usbwisec/

A very "basic" approach, depending on what you want to boot, and how you want it to be protected, is simply done with any stick (just an idea for you to experiment with):
  • remove MBR CODE from hard disk (NOT DATA)
  • remove PBR (bootsector) CODE (NOT DATA) from partitions
  • get an old USB stick, even a 16 Mb will be more than enough
  • put on it grub4dos, with a menu.lst password protected, chainloading directly a system file (you can also remove alltogether from hard disk, either the Linux Kernel or IO.SYS/MSDOS.SYS/COMMAND.COM or NTLDR/NTDETECT.COM/BOOT.INI or BOOTMGR/BCD and place them on the stick)
  • set the PC to boot from USB
  • disable other boot devices in BIOS
  • lock BIOS with password
  • additionally use truecrypt or a similar encryption software (probably some form of "XP Kansas City Shuffle" and checksum mod will be needed for NTbased systems (IMG:../forums/style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) )
