Hi, all!

Tryng to reach a working Encrypted System Volume under XP running from an USB device (as physical Fixed Disk) I found a way to install it on a Logical Drive that seems not yet reported elsewhere and that may involve some advantages. (IMG:../forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

As said here: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...st&p=148627

I wanted to encrypt my USB-XP System Drive, but I noticed that encryption software failed in its work (system volume encryption) and even if rare times it succeeded in its purpose then on another machine it failed again because then really it does not boot after Pre-Boot Authentication: TrueCrypt, BestCrypt Volume Encryption (the only one that in my previous attempts seemed a little more workable), and DriveCrypt Plus Pack and many other ones too: practically I've tested any encryption software that I found and none seemed to work as expected or in a reproducible way. (IMG:../forums/style_emoticons/default/hammer.gif)

Then I've tried many existing USB-XP methods and many combinations of them in order to reach the hoped success and finally seems I found a way.

I thought that to install USB-XP on a Logical partition would have involved advantages, and seems to me it does just that.

Pre-Boot Authentication of encryption software now works fine (because there are no boot-files encrypted? At least, this is what I thought): in fact you have to encrypt only (D:\) System Volume (where just "Windows" resides), not (C:\) volume where there are boot-files...

I like TrueCrypt and finally I tested with 6.0a version all my devices without any further trick (about TC).

Really also I think that with grub4dos (hiding and re-mapping drives) and with a little system-hive hacking then would be possible even to bring Windows to believe that it is in (C:\) drive, but for now I'm focused on this other way: then for other more specific purposes I will need the opinion and the help of forum's members/experts experiences... (IMG:../forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Now TrueCrypt System Volume Encryption works fine on ALL (as Fixed Disk) my tested devices (Western Digital 1600 BEA USB HD, Seagate 2,5" 80 GB HD in USB External Box, LaCie USB Key (mini)hard-drive 8 GB, PEAK 8 GB Flash Drive, Transcend 2 GB Flash Drive) and even when running on other machines Pre-Boot Authentication works great.

RAW image backup of encrypted Logical partition (created with TeraByte Image for Windows, in my case) works fine when restored on other USB devices (only needing an easy TrueCrypt Volume Header and/or Boot Loader restoration "una tantum").

XP SP3 on USB Logical Drive will run with or without other HDs connected to the system (the first boot, without).

Obviously most arguments and most procedures were already widely treated elsewhere, however although repeating many of those I've retraced "most" of all and the following is what I've done:

Pre-requirement:

In order to standardize as much as possible the procedure/result I copied from a new IDE HD (not yet initialized) the MBR ("almost" empty) and over-written it on my USB-HD/UFD MBR (with previously all volumes deleted, that's all unallocated space) with HDHacker (direct download link), then I rebooted my machine and under MMC I answered "YES" (and nothing more) to its initialization request. Then:
Close MMC and with Partition Magic 8.05 create the first Primary Partition as FAT in a size from 7,8 MB to 149 MB (I noticed that some boot-managers/loaders do not work if volume size is too small: SIBLO, for example... it is not useful in that case, but we never know...) and the "second" Logical partitiom as FAT32 in a size of almost 3,5 GB (if larger Windows surely works better, but then the compatibility with 4 GB UFD and/or RAW image backups too large to save are issues to not forget; however you can obviously choose your favorite sizes.
After that re-format two (or more) partitions just created with MMC (it is very important, and maybe the previous passage with Partition Magic can be avoided... but I do not test without use of it) and make as Active the first primary FAT partition.

Now, the following:

1. First of all you must have an USB devices that works as physical Fixed Disk (USB-HDs or UFDs with Lexar BootIt tool pre-treatment), otherwise with Hitachi Microdrive driver (installable after a complete procedure) results are unpredictable (if not wrong results) and on other machines then BSOD occurs.

2. It's better to work on USB Hard Disk at least for system speed and "durability", then all needed files & folders can be transferred on other devices.

3. Create a new XP SP3 installation ISO image (or simply a folder installation) disabling SFC (Windows File Protection) with nLite (also, after installation your "dllcache" folder will result empty).

4. Create a new XP SP3 installation ISO image following NGINE method.

5. Then (optionally) create a new XP SP3 installation ISO image adding your preferred DriverPacks (I've added "Chipset", "CPU", "LAN" and "MassStorage" ones, but not under all my trials).

6. Burn your new ISO image to CD-ROM.

7. Insert your new XP CD-ROM just created, reboot your machine, disconnect any HDs in your system and start with XP installation on the first Logical drive of your USB HD.

8. When the whole installation process is completed and you finally are on your desktop then disable Paging File, "Automatically restart (on System failure)" and System Restore, then shutdown your machine and connect your main IDE HD (running Windows) and boots from it.

Now is the time to partially follow Dietmar's 3-6 methods too:

1. Copy all (D:\) System Drive folders (NOT "System Volume Information" and/or "Recycled") in a new folder ("XP_USB") on your IDE Windows root.

2. Replace "cpu.inf", "usb.inf" and "usbstor.inf" (not "usbport.inf" that will result identical) in "XP_USB\WINDOWS\inf\" with the same modded as following

cpu.inf

CODE
[Processor_Service_Inst]

StartType      = 4; SERVICE_SYSTEM_START

LoadOrderGroup = Base

[IntelPPM_Service_Inst]

StartType      = 4; SERVICE_SYSTEM_START

LoadOrderGroup = Base

usb.inf

CODE
[CommonClassParent.AddService]

StartType      = 3; SERVICE_DEMAND_START

LoadOrderGroup = Base

usbstor.inf (remove following line)

CODE
[USBSTOR.AddService]

Tag            = 3

3. Extract the "sp3.cab" ("XP_USB\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\") content, delete "intelppm.sys" from it (also delete "intelppm.sys" from "dllcache" folder if it is there, but it will be not there with SFC previously disabled), then re-pack a new "sp3.cab" with CABPACK and replace the existing one with "sp3.cab" just created.

4. Highlight HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key in "regedt32.exe" and load "SYSTEM" hive from "XP_USB\WINDOWS\system32\config\" naming it as "otto".

Delete both "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\otto\MountedDevices" key content and "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\otto\ControlSet001\Control\CriticalDeviceDatabase" subkeys.

Highlight "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\otto" key then import "otto.reg" and "otto_usb.reg".

Unload "otto" hive.

5. Replace "system.sav" file in "XP_USB\WINDOWS\system32\config\" with a "SYSTEM" file-copy renamed as "system.sav" (thanks to NK! trick).

6. Now you can copy 3 system folders from "XP_USB" folder to your USB-Device Logical partition and let those existing in first primary partition where they are; if you want you can also use another devices for that, then also you must copy (C;) drive content on first Primary FAT partition.
Please, note that I used original "NTDETECT" file (not patched) and all seems to work fine... however for high-grade safety/compatibility you can replace original one with patched one even on your installation CD-ROM.

7. Now you must boot your USB-Device with NO HD connected.

8. Once on your deskyop first of all wait for (new hardware) USB Mass Storage install (if actually it is not the source one) UNTIL (sometimes it take really "much" time) its auto-detection is completed (no "reboot now").

9. Then edit in
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\intelppm"

the "Group" value to "Base" and the "Start" value to "4".

10. Reboot your machine.

11. Open Device Manager and "Optimize for performance" your USB Device (in Disk Drives) and then "update" following devices with Standard drivers as following:

IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers \ Primary IDE Channel and Secondary IDE Channel.

Universal Serial Bus controllers (I've set all as Standard drivers).

Computer > Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC.

Restart Windows (twice).

12. Done!
Now you can connected in your system other HDs too.

Btw1: if you want to install EWF please note that "boot.ini" lines now are related to (2) and not (1) partition.
