> Rules for Administration
Posted by Alexei - 10-8-07 02:55 - 4 comments
Unpredictable ruling is generally unacceptable.
As some of us found some administartive actions to be unexpected, we need to know what are the rules of the board administration.
Particularly:
- Do Board Rules are applicable to the members of the Board Administration?
- Rules to determine and apply punishment to the administrative staff.
- Rules used to determine if any non-administrative member breaks the Board Rules.
- Rules used to resolve desputes between members and the Board Administration.
- Rules used in determination of facts (for ex. if 3rd party software is re-distributable).
- Rules to distinquish if particular statement is offensive.
Thanks,
Alexei

The board provides for a quick and handy way to show where you are from, by showing the actual banner of your country, or, to be more exact, of the country you indicated as yours.

As you might notice, there is a large numbers of members "from" Afghanistan.

Some of these "Afghan" members show an excellent knowledge of English, whilst some show a noticeable lack of it.

Given the unfortunate situation of war in which Afghanistan is currently involved, and given that however its population is relatively small and most probably the percentage of people having an Internet access is at the moment really meager, noticed the above variations in the language used, I find the amount of "Aghan" members to be highly improbable.
My guess wink.gif is that this happens because Afghanistan is the first country in the drop down list when you register.

There is no need to state your country citizenship, it is just a way to put some colours on your posts and possibly help other members to try and reply in a simpler way to people that state they are coming from non English speaking countries, or in some occasions (I am afraid it would be very difficult in this instance rolleyes.gif ) to reply in your language.

So, if you feel that your Privacy is at risk and like not to display publicly where you come from, please remove from your profile the setting.

If you wish to set it, please do it properly.

Thanks for your cooperation.

> New nativeEx WEB site
Posted by psc - 08-8-07 15:09 - 27 comments
Nuno created two new URLs nativeex.boot-land.net and native.boot-land.net

Currently I'm filling the sites with some stuff. If you visit, please consider that I'm in the middle of constructing.

native.boot-land.net contains some 'editorial' stuff about nativeEx.

nativeex.boot-land.net contains the new download servers for nativeEx_barebone and for a frozen version of LiveXP.

If you download a test from either of both projects: They are still in construction, too. So maybe some troubles. As long as the site is not yet finished, please do not post complains, just PM me.

> nativeEx core in different projects
Posted by psc - 07-20-07 15:47 - 0 comments
Ove PMed me that he has troubles to use the latest Explorer script of nativeEx_barebone inside LiveXP.

Generally:
nativeEx_barebone is an experimental project, always actual and updated frequently.
Every script inside nativeEx_barebone project may need the latest version of nativeEx_core and / or WinBuilder (maybe beta!)

Therefore: If you use one of the nativeEX_barebone scripts in a different project, it propably can become necessary to implement the latest nativeEx_core scripts in your project.

Here the way how to implement the latest nativeEx_core version inside your project, e.g. LiveXP
  • Make a backup of your actual project
  • From the nativeEx download server download
    • nativeEx_core completely
    • Tools completely
    • script.project of nativeEx_barebone
  • Copy all folders of nativeEx_core to your project folder. Allow overwrite
    ATTENTION: do not copy script.project!
  • Modify your project's script.project
    • Delete all [Variables] lines except the really project specific ones, like
      • API definitions
      • %source_OS_folder%=%SourceDir%\I386 (actual sample)
    • Copy to the very beginning of the [Variables] section the first lines of the nativeEx_barebone's script.project [Variables], ending with (including) "%ReOpenScript%= ... "
    • Change "%Core%= ... " to "%Core%=%ProjectDir%"
    • Change "%ProjectName%= ... " to your project name, e.g. LiveXP
    • Replace the [Verify] section by that of nativeEx_barebone's script.project
    • Optionally comment out unwanted Verify checks
  • Select the necessary nativeEx_core's scripts for run and check their options, whether they meet your intentions.
  • Test. When the project run before, it runs now, too!
EDIT: I wrote this script which does most of the update stuff automatically.

> TROUBLESHOOTING HOWTO (Read this first!)
Posted by psc - 06-16-07 16:17 - 0 comments
Maybe you recognized that in the last days we solved an issue Iznogoud had with his source CD.

It took some time, because Iznogoud is not always online, and I'm not always online, but the issue is solved.

In the past I have had some similar issues which have not been solved as the original member requesting help either gave up, disappeared or failed to give the needed details and reports.

Therefore let me remind you of the "common sense" advice contained in Rules:

QUOTE
a. Please do use the Search function before posting a question that has already been asked and (hopefully) answered to. This is another reason for rule #10 above, searching meaningful titled posts is easier and faster.

b. Please avoid to put pressure on other members, I have seen on other boards members posting a question and no later than 2 hours later make another post like "anyone?" or "PLEASE, I really need this URGENTLY!". As said, scope of the board is the exchange of informations on boot related technicalities and software, all members have their own work and come here to relax, learn something new, help others and discuss these topics, if you need something really "URGENT" consider hiring a professional consultant (and be prepared to pay him/her). If your request has not been acknowledged by anyone after a "reasonable" time, that in this case means a few days, you are on the contrary invited to "bump" it, as it may happen that a particular post has been overlooked.

c. Please be prepared to spend some time reading and understanding answers and related links, another common type of poster is one that wants something not only "now", but also only as a "few clicks away" solution, and, possibly "exactly" the way he wants it to be, even if it is technically impossible.

d. Please when asking something, be the more specific you can, even without being verbose you can pass along all the needed information, typical examples:
QUOTE
I am running Windows....

Which one? Just from memory I recall 3 or 4 versions of Windows 3.x, 4 or 5 of Windows 95, 2 of Windows 98, then Millennium Edition, NT 3.51 and 4.00 Workstaion and Server, Windows 2000 various versions, XP Home and Professional and of course Windows Server 2003...
QUOTE
I have an error, it printed a number on a blue screen, the text said something like "You cannot boot from this thingy" or something like that....

When reporting an error, the exact number and text is useful to understand what the problem might be, quite obviously, knowing that it is a STOP: 0x0000007B INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE instead of "something like that" will really help ...
QUOTE
Ok, so I read a tutorial on the Internet and it does not work for me...

Which one, there are thousands of tutorials or articles on the Internet, how are we supposed to know which one you are referring to....
QUOTE
Ok, so I read the tutorial on site www.somesite.ext and it does not work for me, I followed it exactly except for two or three intermediate steps, ...

No comment frusty.gif....

e. Please, if you succeed in whatever you asked help for, do report this and the exact steps you took, it is a form of thanking the member(s) which helped you and to help other people that have the same problem you had.

and, EXPECIALLY the new point f.

QUOTE
Amendment #1 to Rules June 17, 2007 - adding of point f.
Special, more explicit, "common sense" advice, SUPPLEMENTAL to that already present in points a-b-c-d-e above.

Mind you that this advice is given to HELP you solving a problem, and though not compulsory, it will help you more than you might expect in troubleshooting and (hopefully) solve your problem faster.

f. Always think why you are here asking for help:
QUOTE( FACT#1)
It is because you are not able to solve that problem by yourself.

Always think why other members might be able to try and help you:
QUOTE( FACT#2)
Because they are good guys/gals and know more than you do.

The above implies that AFTER you have done your best to comply with points a-b-c-d of the rules, if any member trying to help you asks you supplemental informations and details, to run one or more programs or to do a determinate series of actions and to post results, it is because there are REASONS for this procedure. (you remember, you weren't able to solve this problem by yourself and they know more than you do.)
So, it would be VERY APPRECIATED, and, as said, it will better the quality of the assistance you might receive if you would:
f1.- Post JUST the problem you are having, with needed details, but WITHOUT suggesting what the solution is according to you.
f2.- Temporarily "disconnect" your mind from your idea of WHAT has caused or is causing the problem you have, and of HOW the fix should be made, solving a problem means finding it's SOLUTION, the method through which the latter is found is not relevant and viewing it from just one side can even prevent from finding the solution.
f3.- DO AS YOU ARE TOLD, do not introduce variations of ANY KIND in the given instructions, there are REASONS why they are suggested, and REASONS why they are suggested in the given order and yet more REASONS why other procedures are NOT suggested
f4.- DO NOT think you are smarter than the member who is trying to help you, even if generally speaking this might happen, it DOES NOT apply on the specific topic, nothing can upset more a willing helping member that someone that asks for advice and later does not try the given suggestions and/or does another thing. On the contrary, once the suggested steps have been tried and gave no result, your ideas are welcome, in other words we try to troubleshoot in a "logical" way, as in the famous Sherlock Holmes saying "when you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth", but we like beforehand to exclude the possible, the common, the probable, and this approach solves problems in a MUCH faster way in a large amount of cases.
f5.- BE PREPARED to spend some time interactively searching and (hopefully) finding a solution, remember it is you that are having the problem, the only reason why another member tries to help you is to share and expand his knowledge, and to be gratified by an even small thank you when the solution is found. There are a number of members that, as soon as they see that there is no pre-made one-size-fits-all solution one or a few clicks away, simply disappear from the board, leaving behind an unresolved problem and, possibly, a disappointed member who tried vainly to help.

> Boot Land's Birthday!!
Posted by Nuno Brito - 06-13-07 23:59 - 7 comments
Hi everyone!

I feel very honored to announce our first year of existence as boot-land.net and I truly hope that this is the first of many years filled with good teachings and really interesting topics to talk about.

It's been a very complete year if we take into account all the changes, developments and discussions that one way or another have come to produce excellent results in terms of quality and challenging the concept of what could be done with MS boot disks.

The roots of this forum when it was hosted on a free host should also be remembered and are available for a quick visit here: http://z3.invisionfree.com/Boot_Land or at the 911CD forums where DoctorXP and Bart Lagerweij first debuted a series of interesting projects and ideas that continue being extended and studied up to this day.

Personally, I am very, very happy and proud to have spent an year learning with everyone on this bright international community. This time here has also teached me how to become a better professional on my daytime work and I am really gratefull for this help.

Let this community continue to be where boot methods are discussed and let's keep boot disks a challenge to the future.. laugh.gif

Before starting, remember to define your source CD!

> [testers needed] System Drive
Posted by psc - 05-3-07 17:32 - 16 comments
I think that most of you at least know the troubles we have with Phox's Vista host.
Unfortunatelly the situation with Phox brings two new conditions at a time:
  • He has a Vista host
  • His system drive is D:
To exclude the influence of D: to the troubles, I need your help:

If anybody has access to a XP system drive different from C:, please install WinBuilder in this host and build a pure nativeEx_barebone on this host.

I need the results:
  • Does the 'Welcome' come up?
  • Do you see the RAM icon in the QL bar?
Thanks!

> Translating WinBuilder to your own language
Posted by Nuno Brito - 05-1-07 17:05 - 0 comments
On this topic you find the latest updated english text file wich is used as reference for translating wb

You can download it here:

English: Attached File  English___standard.txt ( 16.19k ) Number of downloads: 137

How to use?

Just place this text file on the following folder from where wb is started:
CODE
Projects --> Tools --> Languages

If this folder doesn't exist, then you can create it.

At this point you can already start by renaming the file to the name of your language.

One note: Use preferably no accents on the filename - if possible use the english name (like Portuguese instead of Portugus) - otherwise it might give issues when being downloaded (some characters are not valid to be downloaded - so english is always safer to use)

After this step, start wb - open the Tools and go to the Languages tab.

Select your Language and start editing away...

Don't forget to ocasionally press the save button and later upload your translated text to be included on wb.

You can also use notepad or any text editor to convert this text file and please ensure that you are always using the latest wb beta in order to have the most updated binary.

How to update the language file?

wb will always use your language file wether it has newer terms or not - those terms missing to be translated will use the default english expression. To update your language you only need to open up the languages tab again and find these newer english terms.

Where to post the new language?

If your language already has a language specific subforum, then you should post it there - otherwise it's fine to post here on wb's discussion forum.

Please add a tag on the title like: "[Language] Portuguese"

Thank you!! laugh.gif

Here are some tips before posting in the forums:

-Remember to use the search utility if you are looking for something

-If you have any problems while building, before asking for help try to update anything you can! Download any new scripts and of course download the latest version of WinBuilder.
If you have still problems, when you post here please post a log of your build and the source you are using (version and language) . It's the best way to help the forum members to solve your problems. Posting a screenshot with the log would be even better wink.gif

-If you don't know how to do something take a look into the tutorials section.

-If you need a new script, remember to post it in the Suggestions and requests section

-If you are new to this forum , take a look at the forums rules

> Board rules
Posted by jaclaz - 07-24-06 10:19 - 16 comments
Here are the basic rules for users of this board, these are MANDATORY, I hope they are clear and simple enough for non-native English speakers too.
If anything is not clear, or it can be written in plainer English, please feel free to PM me.

1. This is not a warez site! Links/Requests to warez and/or illegal material (porn, cracks, serials, etc..) will not be tolerated. Discussion of circumventing WGA/activation/timebombs/keygens or any other illegal activity will also not be tolerated. thumbdown.gif You may be banned without notice.

2. Use some common sense. Don't post your question under multiple topics. Think before posting and choose the right topic for you question or answer. When posting, have something to say, not just "My First post!" or "Cool site!!!" We sort of have the idea by now cool.gif .
It is much appreciated, when you post a reference to something, to provide a link to it.
Replies like "I remember there was an app that did that, cannot remember it's name" are pretty much useless.

3. Please do not post screenshots within threads that exceed 300x200 in resolution and 150kb in size. Provide a link to the image and host it on your own webspace if possible. If you do not have personal webspace there are several FREE image hosting services. Always keep in mind that some members are on a 56k connection and loading a thread with a few large screenshots can be quite slow for them.

4. Spamming will not be tolerated. spam.gif We have provided a section for those who wish to share personal websites, technical news or FREEWARE / OPEN SOURCE projects, NOT commercial ones. Please use these sections only. http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showforum=26

5. Images in signatures should possibly be chosen with "common sense", anything that might, even hypothetically, offend minors, countries and/or their population, religions, political parties etc. will not be allowed and deleted. Flash and animated sigs are not permitted. Signature images must also be chosen of a decent size, say max. 300x100. You can enter max 4 lines of text in signature or signature image. Advertising and/or affiliates are not allowed in signatures nor avatars. Avatars are to be a maximum of 100x100 pixels. If your avatar or signature goes above these guidelines they will be taken off without notice. Members with slow connection can disable other members signatures when reading posts by going to: My Control - Options - Board Settings.

6. If you need to attach something, it'd be great if you could find a host for the file. Please only attach something if you absolutely have no other option. Or as a temporary depository (for example BETA releases). Of course small .inf, .cmd or similar files are welcome.

7. You are expected to be mature when discussing in threads. Racism, pornography, threatening, profanity, or excessive vulgarity is not tolerated. thumbdown.gif This community is built upon mutual respect. You are not allowed to flame other members. People who do not respect personal opinions and/or personal work will be warned in first instance. If you ignore the warning and keep on flaming, you will be banned without notice.

8. Has the thread you started or participated in been moved, closed or deleted? blink.gif Check with the forum moderator via PM. Please do not start new threads asking why other threads were moderated. Forum moderation is not up for public debate, such threads will be deleted and the thread starter warned. The Admin/Mods of this board reserve the right to edit, delete or move posts made on this site.

9. Please refrain from using CAPITALIZATIONS in the topic title or when participating in threads because they will not attract attention - instead it will annoy many members, to experienced forum users, capitalizing without need is just like shouting or giving orders and considered very unpolite.

10. Please do not use meaningless subjects help.gif in topic title. They give no clue of what the posts are all about. For example:

- Oh no!
- Help
- I'm mad
- Please help
- Question
- I need your help
- Hmmmm ....

This should be avoided. Users should enter something more specific in topic title so that it is easier for others to help.

11. No user shall by any means of the forum: sell, trade or give away hardware, software, or any other material, UNLESS it is personal property and it has the "spirit" of a "garage sale", i.e. is something you do not use, wish to give away or similar, DEFINITELY NO COMMERCIAL SALES. mad.gif This board in any case shall not be held accountable.

12. SMILE! cheers.gif Life is tough, we all know that, when you enter this board, it will be appreciated that you leave your personal problems behind, asking and replyinq questions or however exchanging informations with a "positive" attitude, TAKE IT EASY thumbup.gif and enjoy your stay here.

jaclaz

P.S.: WHY the Rules
Rules are here to prevent possible misunderstandings between members and help make this board a peaceful, relaxing place in the net where exchange of MEANINGFUL opinions, ideas can take place.

In a "perfect" world, the above rules would be unnecessary, as all people would "naturally" behave along the same guidelines, which are nothing more than mutual respect.

But please do remember that our is not a "perfect" world, and, particularly, this is a privately owned board where the Owner/Admins/Mods have the power to do whatever they see fit to keep things going as smooth as possible.

You can dislike the idea of rules and even dislike the particular rules that have been stated, but if you do not comply with them, you can leave, there are other places to go.

P.S.:
Following are not rules, but "common sense" advice:

a. Please do use the Search function before posting a question that has already been asked and (hopefully) answered to. This is another reason for rule #10 above, searching meaningful titled posts is easier and faster.

b. e. Please, if you succeed in whatever you asked help for, do report this and the exact steps you took, it is a form of thanking the member(s) which helped you and to help other people that have the same problem you had.

Note:
The above rules have been almost entirely copied from the ones on MSFN forums, as I find them simple and rightful, but most other technical boards use similar ones.

Posted by Nuno Brito - 07-14-06 22:07 - 0 comments

WinBuilder is a free application designed to create small bootable environments.

On this page you'll find instructions and download links to the projects that will allow you to create these boot discs.

Attached Image

Current Build: 072
License: Freeware

Included projects:

VistaPE - a project which completely customizes your Windows PE 2.0 which is available on Vista Install DVD's or inside freely downloadable WAIK from MS. More details can be found here.

LiveXP project is designed to create a 31~100Mb ISO file and contains Explorer as shell, Small CD-Writer, Notepad, RegEdit, Task Manager, driver support for USB pendrives, USB mouses and SATA/Mass storage drives.

nativeEx - the base project used for XP/2003 based builds, it is used to output a very slim and efficient result.

NativePE - Also based on nativeEx, this project features some extreme customizations provided by thunn and other .script developers.

picoXP - the smallest XP on earth! Not meant to be a joke because this project will really output a booting XP sized in 14Mb which can still be used to acess NTFS drives and use cmd.exe as shell. There is no support for GUI apps, only for console based tools.

MobileOS - Turning a full sized XP into a portable OS which boots and run from RAM. This project is still on experimental stage and it is the solution for carrying your OS without limitations to just about anywhere.

ReactOS is another project that is included for demonstration. It is an open source Operative System capable of running Windows programs, no need for external files from Microsoft, just press the Play button to create a boot disk based on this OS.

BartPECore - Will use Bart's PE Builder as core for creating a PE boot disk and allow you to integrate plugins along with wb customizing scripts.

More details on the scripts found inside each project can be found here:

Source requirements

LiveXP, nativeEx, nativePE, picoXP and mobileOS projects will use files from a Windows XP SP2 Install CD or from a Windows 2003 R2.

If you don't have a valid Windows Install CD to use then you can freely download Windows 2003 R2 trial directly from the Microsof Windows 2003 site here:

Hello from NW Michigan, USA.

I am new to building PE enviroments, and have started to manage to get them working on CD's. My main goal is to learn more about them, and eventually figure out how to get an internal HDD to boot vistape properly.

any and all help will always be accepted!

> Forum software update next week!
Posted by Nuno Brito - 10-13-07 13:56 - 1 comments
Hi everyone!

It's time to upgrade the forum software to match the latest version from IPB: http://forums.invisionpower.com/index.php?showtopic=237481 - they've gave a big leap in terms of updates so it's a good ocasion to renew the forum software.

This transition is expected to occur next thursday or friday and may take some time because of some settings needed to be taken care - doing a full backup of the server and databases, test the new version on a local host, etc - most of this work is done while the board is running but at some step it will become temporarily unavailable.

The expected minimum offline time may range between 1 hour and several days (in a disaster situation) and the only critical point is the upgrade itself. After this step it will revert back to a "normal" board without any addons which will slowly be integrated if needed. I will start at night to cause less interference.

------------

If anything goes seriously wrong (predicting murphy's law), there is always the "escape point" on the 911cd.net forums here: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showforum=40 - please add this link on your bookmarks if necessary.

As always - hope you all have a great weekend!! cheers.gif

> vdk, ptedit32 and beeblebrox
Posted by ktp - 10-12-07 16:02 - 1 comments
vdk tool has a particularity that on start (vdk install, vdk start) it "creates" by default
four physical drives. For example if you already have two hard disks:
(hd0)
(hd1)
then on vdk start you get (without knowing it):
(hd0) *
(hd1) *
(hd2)
(hd3)
(hd4)
(hd5)
(*) means real disk (disk ready).
(hd0) is equivalent to dsfo/dsfi notation of \\.\physicaldrive0.
(hd1) is equivalent to dsfo/dsfi notation of \\.\physicaldrive1...

Usually you will use vdk open/link to assign to a hard disk image. By default vdk drive 0, so you get:
(hd0) *
(hd1) *
(hd2) *
(hd3)
(hd4)
(hd5)

Now if you use ptedit32 you will see ONLY the first 3 disks with their associated size :
(hd0) * size0
(hd1) * size1
(hd2) * size2
If you use beeblebroxNT you will see all hard disks but no distinction of which one is really ready:
(hd0)
(hd1)
(hd2)
(hd3)
(hd4)
(hd5)
With beeblebrox if you choose e.g. (hd3) you will get some popup errors since the drive is not ready.

The best is using grubinst_gui.exe (part grub4dos-0.4.3 or later package). In its combo-box for drive,
you will see:
(hd0) * size0
(hd1) * size1
(hd2) * size2
(hd3)
(hd4)
(hd5)
which is the perfect display since it told you what disks are ready.

Now if you plug an external HDD or USB key, there will a \\.\physicaldrive6 (hd6) assigned,
but this disk will NOT appear under ptedit32, since apparently it stops at first not ready drive.
grubinst_gui.exe display is execellent since it continues all physical drives emuneration:
(hd0) * size0
(hd1) * size1
(hd2) * size2
(hd3)
(hd4)
(hd5)
(hd6) * size6

Personally I prefer ptedit32 to beeblebrox (hard disk size identification), but you must be aware of
'missing' physical disks due to vdk reservation gap.

To eliminate the gap (hd2)-(hd5) you have to issue a vdk close (or of course vdk remove).
Then you need to unplug the HDD (hd6) to free this slot, replug it (so it will be assigned (hd2)) and it
will be seen by ptedit32 and hence usable.

The above lines could be a little confused but I hope forum specialists have no problem reading it. :-)

> Adding CHM Help File Support
Posted by Hysteresis - 10-12-07 14:31 - 3 comments
Hi!

Anyone know how to get CHM file help support working on VistaPE?

I've added the following files to the build:

itircl.dll
itss.dll

and registered these together with hhctrl.ocx. I have IE7 (installed with the script) installed, but trying to open a test .CHM file in Explorer, nothing happens. I'm sure I'm missing some components or registry keys. Running WinBuilder 072 with Explorer Vista script version 7.

Any help gratefully received. Thanks

> Meet the MiniOne..
Posted by Nuno Brito - 10-12-07 12:39 - 0 comments
Stumbled on a few interesting reports mentioning an iphone clone done for the chinese market and ended finding out more about the "MiniOne"

This smallish device seems a very nifty piece of hardware for little over $260 when it comes to functionality - but enough talk, here are some pics and specs:

P168 vs iphone
http://gadgets.fosfor.se/iphone-clone-out-in-china/

MiniOne vs Iphone

QUOTE
There are many, no doubt, who are going to take one look at the miniOne and label it an iPhone clone. Nothing could be further from the truth. There have been talk about phones with this formfactor for quite some time now. Witness the LG KE850 (aka the Prada phone) which was introduced to the world last year and has been on the market for several months now. Technically, that would make both the iPhone and the miniOne clones; if you were the childish type who labels thing such. At the end of the day, there can be little doubt that miniOne trumps both the Prada and the iPhone in most of the places where it counts. The miniOne has one of the most robust feature sets of any cellphone that I have seen in quite some time. Pretty much, if you want it on your phone, the miniOne has it - and then some. Without a lot of the proprietary lockouts that are featured in some smartphones.

And then there is the matter of price. Conventional wisdom would suggest that the phone with the best features would cost the most. Well apparently not when it comes to cellphones any longer. The miniOne costs hundreds less than either Prada or iPhone. LG has MSRPed the Prada at a whopping $800. Ouch! That's sticker shock you're feeling right now. The bulk of this, no doubt, is just buying into the Prada name. We know how these things go, Reeboks cost more than New Balance shoes despite the fact that New Balance makes better shoes . . . but then NBA stars don't do endorement deals for New Balance either. Well the same pratice is now hitting mobile phone landscape. And Apple is not about to get left out of this action either. Apple realizes their name brand counts for something monetary, and so are charging a whopping $500 to $600 for the privilage to own an underpowered smartphone . . . that's $500 to $600 with a two year contract to tether you to AT&T Wireless, that is. That sound you're hearing is a groan. It's coming from you, and have not yet realized that you are groaning.

How does the miniOne stack up against the competition in pricing? There are two models of miniOne: the 4GB model and the 16GB model. Both are unlocked and are free to use with any GSM network of your chosing. The 4GB model is MSRPed for $260 and the 16GB model is MSRPed at $450 - that's it. And neither comes with anything remotely like a contract. When you consider how much proven technology is under the hood, even the $450 model is a damned good purchase; especially with no contracts attached.

One other note in the miniOne vs. iPhone debate, is the operating systems. I am not the biggest Microsoft fan when it comes to OS, but at least Microsoft is smart enough to open up Windows Mobile to allow for 3rd party and homebrew software development. As a result, there is so much awesome software out there for the platform.

On the flipside, word from Apple is they have no intentions of opening up OSX for iPhone. They may allow 3rd party software, but they have no intentions of ever allowing homebrew and open source software to appear on the device. I know this is a complete 180 from where Apple usually seems to stand; for those of you who are familiar with the company. But apparently they want to treat the iPhone very much as an extension of the iPod franchise, which means, no homebrew/opensource for iPhone - ever. When you think about all the software and games and mods and emus that are out there right now that are being enjoyed by smartphone users the world over on JAVA, BREW, linux, Symbian and Windows-based smartphones (amoung other various smartphone platforms), Apple's desire to keep all that wealth of goodness from it's customers is a bit of a slap in the face, not to mention a major step in a decidedly wrong direction.

So sleek formfactor guaranteed to make you the center of conversation at any social gathering, more advanced features than you can shake a stick at built on an array of proven technologies, a robust 3rd party/home brew/open source software development community, no proprietary lock outs, and an offordable pricing structure with no contracts. Really, what more is there when it comes to extra features for a smartphone?

> About new version VistaPE 010
Posted by online - 10-12-07 05:32 - 3 comments
Hi all! smile.gif

I have some questions about topic title that are not very clear for me...

1. Why not provide a Downloads specific section for VistaPE-Beta 010?

2. Is a script created for 008 version compatible with last version (010)?

3. About RunFromRAM option: I see that new sintax provides for this type of string

CODE
RunFromRam,%pCheckBox1%
, but it seems to me that it doesn't work like previous one.
If CheckBox is or is not ichecked seems to me that then program folder creation occurs always in "X:\Program Files" directory... confused1.gif
Furthermore I saw some scripts in new version that show the following sintax (that I've always use with success):
CODE
If,%pCheckBox2%,Equal,true,SET,"%DestDir%","Program#$sFiles\%OutDir%"
If,%pCheckBox2%,Equal,false,SET,"%DestDir%","Programs\%OutDir%"
If,%pCheckBox2%,Equal,true,SET,"%LinkDir%","%SystemDrive%\Program#$sFiles\%OutDir%"
If,%pCheckBox2%,Equal,false,SET,"%LinkDir%","y:\%OutDir%"
System,RefreshVars
and now I am a bit confused...

4. About RegHive the issue is the same: I see
CODE
RegHiveLoad,WB-Software,%RegSoftware%

and then also
CODE
RegHiveLoad,Tmp_software,"%HIVE_HKU%"

And my confusion is increasing...

Where I'm wrong?
Every suggestion is a lot appreciated! thumbsup.gif

> CAD-KAS PDF Reader 2.4
Posted by online - 10-11-07 14:24 - 6 comments
File name: CAD-KAS PDF Reader 2.4

Description:

CAD-KAS PDF Reader is a nice application that works so fine under VistaPE.

From soft32.com Review:

Editor's rating: 5 out of 5 - Excellent
Features: 5
Stability: 5
Usability: 5
Interface: 5

PDF Reader by CAD-KAS Software is a powerful tool designed to help you open, edit and print PDF (Adobe Portable Document Format) files.

The program proves to be a reliable alternative to Adobe Acrobat software, especially due to the fact that you can modify a PDF file before printing. In my opinion, this is the most important feature of this free application.

The are a lot of editing options at hand: you can add notes, free text, stamps, links using the 'Annotations/Forms' tool. The 'Text' tool allows you to add simple text, vector text, and format text. The 'Graphics' tools allow you to add shapes, lines of different colors.

Another thing I liked a lot was the fact that theres also an option for inserting pictures. After inserting pics, I could choose the aspect ration, transparency color and tolerance. I could also choose to edit it and I could insert it behind all other objects.

The program's interface is ergonomic and easy to use. You can customize it by choosing one of the six styles available. The program is available in fifteen languages among which Japanese and traditional Chinese.

Pluses: Multi-language support, the possibility to edit a PDF and print it out with the current modifications.

Drawbacks / flaws: The program may act a little bit slow when opening large files.

In conclusion: An excellent PDF reading, editing and printing program; and above all, it is free. I find it very pleasant to see that there are people out there who can create a free ultra competitive product.

Version reviewed: 2.4

PDF Reader Publisher's Description

PDF Reader is a free program to view, modify and print PDF files. It is very small, only about 2 MByte to download. You can open, view, zoom and print PDF files. You can also modify PDF files (but you can not save them in the free version). You can add, change and delete text and pictures and print it out.

Simply copy the script in "\WinBuilder\Projects\VistaPE\App\Office"

> Command Line Shutdown/Reboot
Posted by robinj - 10-11-07 14:09 - 7 comments
Hello,

I was trying to create an Autoit script for use in LiveXP that automates a few tasks. When done, I wanted it to shutdown or reboot LiveXP. Does anyone know a simple way to do this? Autoit tries to use Shutdown which is not part of default build so it fails, then I tried using various DLL calls using rundll32. Only one I can find is the one that brings up the standard shutdown GUI which you still have to respond to.

Must be someway of doing this since Ghost can do it.....

Thanks for any ideas

> Car PC Security booting
Posted by sxtnitehawk - 10-10-07 19:57 - 7 comments
I'm building a car pc and the way i'm setting it up, the PC will directly control the ability to start the car(ignition cylinder will be removed from the steering column). I want to make sure that the system cant be booted without a usb device plugged in, but i've heard that putting the whole OS on a usb stick can make boot times go sky high and I've been told to only move the boot kernel onto the usb drive and leave the OS itself onto the hard drive. This makes perfect sense, but how would I go about doing it?

I'm guessing I'de have to move NTLDR onto the stick....but what else do i have to do?

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks

Matt

Hi, all! thumbsup.gif

I've just downloaded last VistaPE [010] and I've found that in "Locale" script there are many languages to choose (great! cool.gif ).

Then, I've carefully read the script and I've discovered that is in the attached image: every language's author is mentioned, except that Italian locale... rolleyes.gif tongue.gif

Now, if it's true like it's true that I had been helped from many (clever and kind) members it's also true that lastly that script was a work of mine (even I can prove this)... blush.gif

So, it would be very appreciated if... hyper.gif thumbup.gif

On this occasion I've rationalized my script removing encoded (and useless!) dll... and I attach it here... smile.gif

Btw: this post is half-jokingly... cheers.gif

> Networking solved by not autostarting PENetwork
Posted by pepo - 10-10-07 16:17 - 8 comments
Using Winbuilder 072a to build LiveXP and XP+SP2 to build from

I have been trying to build a LiveXP CD which installed networking.
At first I selected the autostart option under PENetwork.
When I booted from the CD networking was started but my network card appeared to be installed twice
(the name of the card appeared once and then falshed up very briefly a second time)
PE Network Manager did not list any network cards
I could not then access the network and Device Manager showed the following error for the network card
- Windows cannot load the device driver for the hardware because a previous nistance of the driver is still in memory.

After a lot of frustration I have just tried the following.
Build LiveXP but with the autostart option for PENetwork not selected.
Include in the build the drivers for the network card by providing a path in the 'Add drivers from this directory' textbox
Create a CD from the ISO file.
Boot from the CD
When boot has finished open a command prompt
Enter the following command 'startnet -l -c p -i ms_tcpip -pnp'
Networking then starts without any problems and the network is visible
Running PE Network Manager from the desktop icon now displays the expected network info, i.e. ip addresses, and also showed the correct netwrok card.

Note: startnet is in the System32 folder of the build. Entering 'startnet' at the command prompt gives a list of possible options. Other options you might need are -wg to chage the workgroup and -cn to change the computer name.

Looks like PE Network Manager has a problem but at least I have finally found a workround!
Hopefully Holger will rectify the problem

* Built in file viewer to view files in hex, binary, text or image format
* File viewer inside archives too
* Built in archive handling: ZIP (read, write), CAB (read, write), RAR (read)
* Nested archive handling
* Easy access to system folders, control panel, desktop and start menu
* Copy, move, delete, rename files and folders
* Wipe files

It works so fine under VistaPE.

Script add-on: ExamDiff 1.7 is a freeware tool for visual file comparison defined in this script as default program to compare text files.
So you can select two text files and then start the compare files with Ctrl+Alt+V.
The two text files can be selected in one window or separated in two windows.

Simply copy both scripts in "\WinBuilder\Projects\VistaPE\App\File Tools".

Posted by SlimShady - 10-10-07 15:09 - 3 comments
Hi,

I'm new here. And I love this application.
There's just this error I don't understand.
Run - Failed to find section [ExpDiskPart] in file: [C:\Winbuilder\Projects\PicoXP\Apps\diskpartgui.script]

But it is there! I moved that section above and below [Process] with no change in result.
Could you check the script and give me advice? Thanks.

Hi

Anyone know if its possible to get system restore to run in VistaPE (i.e. like when booting from the Vista DVD into the recovery options, you get several tasks you can run including system restore) - just would be very handy for my work of rescuing customers buggered computers, often have to carry vista dvd with me to do this as they often don't get DVD's with their computers and if I could have it running from the VistaPE multiboot CD it would be great!

Thanks!

> Firewire key?
Posted by ktp - 10-10-07 11:51 - 3 comments
I read from an article (Google search) about a company named OCZ that presented recently at Computex a Firewire key,
it looks like an "USB" key (stick) but its connects through the Firewire (IEEE 1394) interface (6-pin). Is it interesting?
The performance (throughput in read/write MB/s) is a little better than USB 2.0. But the problem is that PC/laptop not-MAC does not seem to be able to
boot from Firewire (no BIOS function), and on laptops the Firewire plug is usually 4-pin, that is to say no 2 power pins, so it is a problem.
The USB 2.0 plug (either A or B or mini-A mini-B ) includes power so it is really handy for USB key and 2"5 HDD with low
energy consumption (500 mA).

Questions (kind of brainstorming) :
1) Why BIOS on PC world does not support Firewire boot?
2) In the future there is also Wireless USB2. I do not know the impact on BIOS, or booting process.
3) PXE (network boot). Currently it seems to be only Ethernet. It is possible to boot from WiFi (802.11a/b/g/n)?
4) There are external CD/DVD-ROM drives connected through both parallel port (very old days), USB2 or Firewire, or PCMCIA/Express Card.
Any technical problems booting from these CD/DVD?

During development I sometimes have different WinBuilder apps open, with different %BaseDir%
Sometimes I have problems do decide 'Who is Who'

Would be nice if the caption shows the %BaseDir%. Maybe as a 'Debug' option defined in WinBuilder.ini

I downloaded a boatload of scripts to make my VistaPE much more usable, but none of them show up when I test the ISO. I am putting the new scripts in the Winbuilder\projects\vistape\app\ folder and telling winbuilder to include them but it doesn't seem to work. Can anyone shed some light on what i am doing wrong?

Posted by foggw - 10-9-07 17:32 - 1 comments
Nuno,

There appears to be a bug in 'Retrieve,FileSize' in both WinBuilder 072 and 072a.
Any Zeros in the file path are replaced with the Returned File Size.

I have attached a Zip file with:
1. The original !CheckTools.Script that I was running when I discovered this.
2. A test Script to demonstrate the problem !!Bogus.script
3. The output from !!Bogus.script when run from three different directories and using WinBuilder 072 and 072a.
4. A Readme.txt file that is basically the text that follows.

Using American/English Windows XP SP2 VLA as source CD.
Using both WinBuilder 072 and 072a
Discovered while building [nativeEx_barebone] project.
Script: Projects\nativeEx_barebone\Basic\!WBManager\!CheckTools.Script
Log showed Failure: Trying to WebGet file 7za.exe to Obviously incorrect folder.

Check Script: Projects\nativeEx_barebone\Basic\!WBManager\!!Bogus.Script
Output file: Test.txt

%Dir% before 'Retrieve,FileSize' call
C:\!Work\WinBuilder\WinBuilder_20071009\Projects\Tools

%Dir% After 'Retrieve,FileSize' call
C:\!Work\WinBuilder\WinBuilder_2197120197120711971201971209\Projects\Tools
All Zeros are replaced with the returned file size 197120
C:\!Work\WinBuilder\WinBuilder_2[197120][197120]71[197120][197120]9\Projects\Tools

Before: C:\!Work\WinBuilder\WinBuilder_072\Projects\Tools
After: C:\!Work\WinBuilder\WinBuilder_19712072\Projects\Tools

No Zeros in Path before/after is the same.
C:\!Work\WinBuilder\WinBuilder_YYYYMMDD\Projects\Tools

(Hopefully that was coherent)

Thanks for all your efforts!

I'm new here and I looked all this forum without luck.
I want to create a boot CD from XP and I want to be able to make changes on files, all I want is a ramdisk that records only file changes of the CD but a don't want to load all the CD to a ramdrive because I don't have enough ram for that.
I first tried winbuilder because I thought It would do that but I couldn't do it and that's why I'm asking for help here.

Thanks.

Posted by Alexei - 10-9-07 00:43 - 0 comments
@Nuno,
You may remember "Simple Substitution" and "Functional Plugins" ideas.
They are ready to use.
We can give them a try at new WB build.
What I'm thinking about is:
- You add something like "/test001" parameter to WB command line parameters.
- If it is specified, you call Substitution plugin during script load (just replace reading cycle with calling plugin).
- Writing Substitution plugin should take about 10min because I already supplied substitution unit.
Such approach would allow you (and others) to play with those features safely.
I believe, it would be reasonable if you try making both (client and server) sides of the this plugin just to be comfortable developing the communication protocol. Of course, you can rely on my help and support.
What do you think?

> Virtual Machine as a PE shell
Posted by Alexei - 10-8-07 23:43 - 12 comments
I'm thinking about Virtual PC with a "saved" VM as a shell smile.gif
So, it's gonna be like that:
- PE starts and loads drivers
- User configurates network
- Virtual PC starts in full screen mode and restores saved VM (fully functional XP or whatever you saved) smile.gif
I already tried this approach running full XP under Virtual PC. It boots very slow, but when booted it eventually becomes faster as more modules is uploaded to the ram.
That's why I'm going to use saved image of the OS.
Of course, VMware (and, maybe QEMU) can be used as well.

I am not sure which project to choose as a base for such build.
The build should have:
- maximum hardware compatibility
- networking support
- some support to troubleshoot hardware issues
- probably, RDC client (I noticed graphics over RDC is faster then in VM window)

The major advantage is that you can run any OS with minimum restrictions. Applications' scripts become obsolete smile.gif

There are a lot of flexibility: for ex. you can have PE on CD or DVD and your VM on USB drive, you can use undo feature if desired. You can normally run your OS on your desktop computer, copy virtual HDD to a flash drive and take it whereever you go.
Small PE (on a 80mm CD) plus flash drive would easily fit into your pocket, though, of course, you can have both PE and guest OS on the same medium.

Both VPC and VMware claim to be less then 10% slower than on a "bare metal", so it's not a big deal smile.gif

There are many other advantages, such as having virtual HDD as a compressed file, etc.

The questions I have:
- Which WB project is the best to start with?
- Did QEMU fix the bugs that did not allow VPC and other VMs to run on Win under QEMU (for testing) ?
- I wrote a script to run Virtual PC 2004 on PE a while ago. Does anybody willing to make such scripts for VMware, etc.?
VMware on PE, not PE on VMware smile.gif

And a bit off topic: does anybody ever heard about drivers that present DVD RW as a regular HDD?

cheers.gif

I know I've been talking about different things like how to have an xp install inside of a live cd and stuff like that, but I thought that maybe someone out there has an idea to make a script for the next winbuilder where you can choose an iso of an xp install and have it "embedded" into the live cd when it boots. I know i'm not explaining myself as much as I should but there must be other people out there who would like to be able to go on the internet or save files from there harddrive, and at the same time watch the progress of xp or maybe vista being installed to the harddrive of your choice. In my opinion I think someone should write a script to do it...sounds like a good project right?

Hi all,
I spent many time on this interesting forum.

I have a serious problem to know the boot-land subdomains that contains .script file and projects.

In Winbuilder 0.72 standard version are not present ALL boot-land servers

Today I have discovered unattended.boot-land.net.
For me boot-land and winbuilder are a continuous discover.

So It's possible create a list of boot-land subdomains with detailed description.
Here there a MANY projects, but I cannot see an organic view.

It will be usefull create a sticky thread for newbies.

> [php] New Server
Posted by Nuno Brito - 10-8-07 00:10 - 2 comments
Hi everyone!

Description

This beta script is mostly meant for developers who wish to upload a few files to a web server and need to modify the updates.ini file.

It will avoid having to maintain a mirror server on their computer or manually editing the changes on the updates.ini

What it will do:

Will output a new updates.ini based on the contents of the subfolders and files from where it is placed.

Usage

-- Upload to the same folder where your updates.ini is placed
-- Change permissions of the output file to 777
-- Run this script - example: http://myserver.com/new_server.php

Beta testing

This script was tested under xampp running PHP5 in windows - I've noticed that under the boot-land.net server (which is based on debian), a few modifications had to be made.

Please help by reporting any bugs you notice - if you have experience with PHP and know how to fix it, I would appreciate any help!

By default - this script will output to a file called test.txt - you'll be able to change these settings inside the script itself

Advantages

This means that you can upload your scripts at any given time to your download server and then use this script to generate a new valid updates.ini to be used along with wb.

CODE

<?php

// This file will generate an updates file based on the all files and subfolders available
// It is supposed to be used with the download center from winbuilder

// Main Configuration - edit if needed //

// How should the updates file be called?
$output_filename = 'test.txt';
$update_section = 'Updates';

function output ($somecontent)
// this function will output both on the webpage as on the text file
{
// Output this text on the web page - Add // to make it faster or avoid any output
echo "$somecontent</br>";

$output_filename = 'test.txt';

// Let's make sure the file exists and is writable first.
if (is_writable($output_filename)) {

if (!$handle = fopen($output_filename, 'a+')) {

exit;
}

// Write $somecontent to our opened file.
if (fwrite($handle, $somecontent."\n") === FALSE) {
echo "Cannot write to file ($filename)";
exit;
}

}

Sections can use any character excluding ASCII control characters and ASCII
DEL. (You may even use [ and ] characters as literals!)

Keys can use any character excluding ASCII control characters, ASCII DEL,
ASCII equals sign (=), and not start with the user-defined comment
character.

Values are binary safe (encoded with C-style backslash escape codes) and may
be enclosed by double-quotes (to retain leading & trailing spaces).

User-defined comment character can be any non-white-space ASCII character
excluding ASCII opening bracket ([).

readINIfile() is case-insensitive when reading sections and keys, returning
an array with lower-case keys.
writeINIfile() writes sections and keys with first character capitalization.
Invalid characters are converted to ASCII dash / hyphen (-). Values are
always enclosed by double-quotes.

> Network support in vistape
Posted by darren rose - 10-7-07 14:27 - 24 comments
Hi, am new to this forum, have always been a BartPE builder user for years now, and as it no longer gets updated now looking at winbuilder and especially vistape

One problem though is getting networking working under vistape, does any one know of a working script file that actually works okay under vistape without having to understand the scripts and/or make any other changes?

Have tried Holgers network and the supplied penetcfg, but the holger one seems to be for XP based projects and does not even install, whereas the penetcfg comes up fine but won't get a ip from dhcp etc.

Help please?!!!!

Thanks

Hello. I'm running into a frustration that I somehow dealt with yesteryear.

Throughout the days I've used PEBuilder, WinBuilder and the trusty MKIMG.CMD against a copy of 03SP2 to create a premastered image of WinPE. I get what I need from each builder as long as I use the exact source used to create the original image in the first place.
I start the image in vmware and everything works right. I can get Notepad to pop up. I can install Windows with it, the whole shebang. However, I need to stick to MKIMG.CMD to keep the process under the contract and within legally supported boundaries.

Here's what I'm doing:

I created a LEGACY root for premastered images in ISO9660 and Joliet with modification titles. This is good so that when I run into a serious ****up I can just go back to the last good configuration by ripping the contents of the previously working image and starting from that point. To give you an idea, it looks a little something like this:
DaemonPE_0.01_ForgedRip1.iso 156,772 KB
DaemonPE_0.02_FBWF-6001.iso 157,016 KB

and so on...

I'm encountering a serious problem once I screw up somewhere:
I can't get the previous model working again. I use WinImage to rip the image contents and if I use a premastering tool like CDIMAGE, the build simply doesn't work right. This makes itself apparent once I launch WinPE in vmware and attempt to launch an application. I get an error saying the program can't be executed. CMD will load but that's it. It's about as useless as PicoXP except this build is several times bigger. I notice that the premastered image made from the ripped contents of a working image always has a bigger image size by about 70KB. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Why does this happen?

Posted by booty#1 - 10-6-07 17:19 - 1 comments
Hi,

I just tried to download some files from the section "OtherOS" from the WinBuilder-repository http://vistape.boot-land.net/beta/ using WinBuilder's download function.
It tried it several times and it always fails downloading the file "bzImage" with an error message that bzImage.web can not be found.
Afterwards WinBuilder stalls, "Download cancel"-button has no effect.

> How can this be done?!
Posted by DaemonForce - 10-6-07 16:18 - 20 comments
First of all I'd like to thank you for opening this thread.

I'm running into a frustration when running a remote registry command for data entry.
I have 64 problem keys that need fixing. I cannot proceed with my build without automating this process.
This is the first problematic command:
REG ADD "HKLM\...\{135698D2-3A37-4d26-99DF-E2BB6AE3AC61}\InProcServer32" /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d "%SystemRoot%\System32\dmintf.dll" /f

The problem here is a bit obvious. I need %SystemRoot% to remain an unexpanded environment variable or the result is C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmintf.dll after running that command. I've tried working around this problem by using carrots before each % notation. I then get: ^%SytemRoot^%\System32\dmintf.dll

If I remove the quotes it's fine: %SystemRoot%\System32\dmintf.dll blink.gif

Now that is fixed.
Here's the real problem:
I need those quotes for namespaces with two commands that have environment variables.

I'm using Alt+255 to generate a space character inside of these commands and I'm not so sure that's a good idea.

Any ideas as to make this work?

> International FORMAT "Y"
Posted by jaclaz - 10-6-07 16:12 - 13 comments
I am writing the MKIMG part of my MBRbatch.cmd.

(for those who didn't see it is a batch to manage MBR's on "real" and "virtual" disks, MKIMG will create and format a HD image of given size/geometry/filesystem)

In the process, I mount the image with VDK and FORMAT it, there is no problem in "interactive" mode, but to make possible to use it as batch with no user intervention I need to "feed" a "Y" (in English) to FORMAT. Besides, I need to use in "interactive mode" the /P switch of DEL to require user confirmation for the deletion of two files, and omit it in "batch" mode. The code is like this:
CODE
....
SET Noprompts=%5
....
IF NOT DEFINED NoPrompts SET PDEL=/P&SET PFormat=FORMAT
FOR %%A IN (o y s) DO IF /I %NoPrompts:~1,2%.==%%A. (SET PDEL=&SET PFormat=echo %%A^| FORMAT ) ELSE (SET PDEL=/P&SET PFormat=FORMAT &SET Noprompts=)
....
%Pformat% %Drive% /FS:%Filesystem% /Q /V:NO_NAME

The effect, given that image is mounted as J: and filesystem is FAT is (on English System):
in "interactive" mode:
CODE
FORMAT J: /FS;FAT /Q /V:NO_NAME

(user is prompted to confirm)

in "batch" mode:
CODE
ECHO Y | FORMAT J: /FS;FAT /Q /V:NO_NAME

(format goes on without user intervention)

For now I have:
S for S (Italian)
O for Oui (French) unsure.gif
Y for yes (English)

I could well put in the FOR list all letters, in order to let the user use the one he normally uses with his national version of the FORMAT command, but the "narrower" the list is the less prone to problems, and besides it would be nice if I could provide in the docs a list of accepted switches ordered by nations.

Any contribution will be appreciated.

> xp install from within live cd?
Posted by sokolofskid - 10-6-07 13:31 - 6 comments
Hello, I was wondering if it's possible to have an app in live xp or another live cd where when you boot into the live cd you could start a windows xp install while still being able to go on the internet and stuff like that. Does anyone know how? Also have both the live cd and xp install on the same cd not a dvd. (I would like to put a stripped down xp on it that's only about 400mb.) Another idea would be to have more then just one kind of xp install on the live cd. Also if there is a way to compress the installs and still have it work i would like to know that as well. Thank you.

I appologize to everyoe who was looking forward to testdriving my EvilPE this weekend. But the upload is canceled for now and you may never get to see it, sorry.

EvilPE though legaly safe to use and host, did not have it's name for nothing.
It's making use of the 'grey zone' to the fullest.

And with our newly found morality, you can just as well take nativeEX, fix a few bugs and you get the same as a cleaned up EvilPE.

Personal note:
This was my 4. attempt to create a own project and though it got closer to being uploaded then any of my previous ones, before being shot down, it will also be my last attempt.
It makes me sad and angry to see all the time and work, i put in, wasted, time and time again, just because the rules keep on changing.
I hope that WB and Boot-land will one day mature to the point that one can really rely on it.
But i don't see it!

> change active windows dir??
Posted by kali - 10-4-07 10:44 - 1 comments
I got liveXP working just fine. Burned the ISO to a CD.

Boots great from the cd (although it doesnt find my network card - but it is an older machine). However a problem I am having is I am trying to use/run some software that needs to modify / patch some of the windows files. The problem is the software doesnt let me choose the location of the windows directory to patch. I think it is just going off of what the active windows directory is - which is the ramdrive?? (x:\ on my machine) that liveXP sets up. So it tries to patch the windows folder on the x:\ drive which ofc doesnt work.

Is there any way to somehow switch the active windows directory so that I can run my program? Or maybe there is another solution I am not mentioning. My alternative solution is to reinstall XP which basically would be a massive pain in the ass because of how many folders / directories / data that I would have to do a witch hunt for.

This is for one of my own personal machines. So I do not have a nice external usb hdd to image my drive to and then just reinstall windows and not worry about it. So patching >>> than reinstalling everything. Oh and windows is totally screwed on my machine - it does not even boot - thus why I was hoping to beable to do this through liveXP.

Posted by Bunta - 10-3-07 19:02 - 0 comments
I made a few alterations to the ClamWin Portable script that gets downloaded during the WinBuilder update.

The problem was that if you didn't have it selected to Run from Ram then you couldn't run the internet updates or even change any of the settings. So, what I did was modify it so if you choose not to select "Run from Ram" it would put the db files on the RAM drive and edit a copy of the settings file in a ram location to adjust the settings to something that is useable.

Here's the new code:

CODE

Posted by cyn - 10-3-07 17:02 - 2 comments
Hi!
I have a DVD iso image with a Ezboot mutliboot loader (and lots of other stuff) on it. I was asking myself if there is a way to encrypt the whole iso, leaving the bootability intact.
Basically what I am looking for is a program, that encrypts the image and adds a bootable decryption program 'in front' of the usual boot sector. i would like to be prompted for my password before booting the cd, but then be able to run the boot-programs as if it was not encrypted.
as for non-boot use any usual cd protection would be sufficient (entering password, then mounting the disc as another drive)

do you guys know, if there is a software like this?
thanks!

I keep getting the occasional user who has downloaded a really old version of the FreeDOS distribution (usually Beta5) and even though they ftp'd it from 'official.old' on the ibiblio archive, these users still ask me why things are out of date or do not work correctly. I keep pointing them to the 1.0 distribution, and that seems to work fine for them. So to remove any confusion, I plan to remove the old FreeDOS distributions from ibiblio, effective next week. Imre Leber writes: "I am hereby releasing a new version of FreeDOS MORE: version 4.3. The major change is that it now support long file names. This has been tested under FreeDOS with the doslfn TSR. This does not look at the setting of the LFN variable like djgpp and FreeCOM do. For now it seems a good thing since long file name support in FreeCOM is dangerously broken." You can find the new version at: http://users.pandora.be/imre/FreeDOS/more43.zip (With the kind permission of Tom Ehlert, Imre is now the new maintainer for FreeDOS MORE.) (0 comments)

> Partition saving program
Posted by ktp - 10-1-07 18:11 - 6 comments
I just discover this site that could interest some of you:
http://www.partition-saving.com/

Partition Saving is a free DOS and Windows program that is used to save, restore and copy hard disks, partitions, floppy disk and DOS or Windows devices.
There are standalone DOS and Win32 executables (portable applications, good for USB key), and also a bootable diskette image that could be useful
for multi-boot key (syslinux/grub4dos). It can handle/repair Vista boot configuration and fix boot sector/defective sectors.

Hi all,

I am new here. Can any one recommend me any debug tools in WINPE, built-in or easy to integrating? Graphic user interface is better.

I use debug tools to debug application programs.

Thanks.

> MBRBatch 0.01 ALPHA
Posted by jaclaz - 10-1-07 09:25 - 5 comments
Ok, peeps, here is the ALPHA 0.01 Release of MBRBatch.cmd.

You will need an awful lot of command line utilities to go with it (and even more when the missing features will be added), for now:

dsfo/dsfi from the DSFOK package:
http://members.ozemail.com.au/~nulifetv/freezip/freeware/

gsar:
http://home.online.no/~tjaberg/

dumphex:
http://rbach.priv.at/DumpHex/

The files need to be in the same directory where MBRBatch.cmd is or in the PATH, the batch will prompt you for missing files.

Here is a main screen, to let you have an idea of what it (hopefully) does:
CODE
mbrbatch.cmd batch file to manage MBR's Release 0.01 Pre_ALPHA 1st Oct. 2007
by jaclaz, this file is licensed under my "CAREWARE" license:
http://home.graffiti.net/jaclaz:graffiti.net/careware.html

General syntax is mbrbatch.cmd COMMAND [parameters], commands are:

CREATE targetfile Creates MBR from a 2K/XP file saving it as targetfile
VIEW source Shows partition entries in source MBR
COPY source targetfile Copies a MBR from source, saving it as targetfile
EDIT sourcefile [params] Edits one partition entry in MBR file
UPATCH sourcefile Patches sourcefile with "HP" USB/int13 modification
(sourcefile must contain 2K/XP MBR code)
WRITE source target [/F] Writes a MBR file to target
MKIMG filesize Creates an image of given size, complete of MBR
(NOT YET AVAILABLE)
HELP command Displays help for the given command

Notes:
[source] can be a file or a drive number, [sourcefile] must be a 512 bytes file
[target] can be a file or a drive number, [targetfile] must be a NEW file

If any non-optional parameter is missing, it will enter interactive mode.

The command is relatively safe, as it operates mainly on files, the only exception is the WRITE command that can write to disk (writing to \\.\PHYSICALDISK0, i.e. boot drive needs to be forced, however).

It is ALPHA, a LOT of corners still need to be rounded, and temp files and variables are not (yet) managed completely in the proper way, but it appears to be working.

Your suggestions, bug reporting (if any wink.gif) and ideas are welcome.

This is the console version of starwars - it's very nice, hope you like it..

Under windows:

Click on the Start Menu --> Run --> Type:
CODE
telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl

This should bring a telnet window, if you don't have telnet then putty will also work.

Found this resource here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=254...amp;postcount=1

Posted by online - 09-30-07 15:43 - 0 comments
File name: Plextor PlexTools Professional LE 3.13

Description:

This freeware application is an excellent optical-media burner, audio extractor (ripper) and/or audio converter and it gives extra support to Plextor (and not only) hardware by enhancing the possibility to directly control specific functions.

About PlexTools

It works fine under VistaPE, and (script) player functions are not supported (MultiMediaPlayer, AudioCDPlayer); mp3 Windows-codec conversion setting generates an application error even under Windows Vista: maybe it's a bug, however there is LAME encoder! wink.gif

It supports PCM (WAVE), MP3 (L.A.M.E.), Monkey's Audio, Ogg Vorbis and FLAC Audio Formats conversion and also it is useful to test, to calibrate, to measure and to diagnose Plextor (and not only) optical drives features.

Multilingual Interface (Dutch, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Russian).

Simply extract the archive and copy the script in "\WinBuilder\Projects\VistaPE\App\CD Record".

[Special thanks to MedEvil about Fonts issue].

> HEADS UP for Excel 2007
Posted by jaclaz - 09-29-07 09:56 - 1 comments
If you are using Excel 2007, there is a nasty bug in it for a certain range of numbers:
http://www.msfn.org/board/EXCEL_2007_CALCU...OR_t105089.html

http://bink.nu/news/microsoft-confirms-exc...lation-bug.aspx

http://www.accountingweb.co.uk/cgi-bin/ite...1023&f=1026

Though I don't think anyone uses Excel for vital calculations, I am surprised at the type and seriousness of the error. w00t.gif

And yet another (if needed) confirmation to my theory:
QUOTE
This issue only exists in Excel 2007, not previous versions.

Latest does not always equate to "better". whistling.gif

A technical analysis on the problem:
http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2007/09/26b.html

Of the various comments here:
http://blogs.msdn.com/excel/archive/2007/0...sue-update.aspx

this one struck me as being simple and to the point:
QUOTE(Thursday @ September 27, 2007 5:24 AM by Jerome)
That's why most of us are staying with Office 2000 and Windows XP.

Remember my boss was so mad when his wireless keyboard missed a key stroke. One hundred thousand became ten thousand could be a very serious mistake.

If you send out an Excel order form to order 850 pieces of $77.1 parts. The recipient open it with Excel 2007 and charge you $100,000. This is no fun.

For the record, OpenOffice.org is NOT affected by this bug, and since AFAIK it uses floating point math as well, the bla-bla-bla about this BUG being implicit in the way calculations are made appears like pure nonsense. unsure.gif

Fport

Identify unknown open ports and their associated applications
Copyright 2002 © by Foundstone, Inc.
http://www.foundstone.com

fport supports Windows NT4, Windows 2000 and Windows XP

fport reports all open TCP/IP and UDP ports and maps them to the owning application. This is the same information you would see using the 'netstat -an' command, but it also maps those ports to running processes with the PID, process name and path. Fport can be used to quickly identify unknown open ports and their associated applications.

This one is quite handy and will display all open connections (just like netstat) but will also link back to the executables that are making use of the ports.

i have a Problem. I read here: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=16528 that i can build a microPE. But these links on this page doesen't help me: I cant open this page.

I need a WinPE for deploying my clients via ImageX with a Vista-Imagefile. I cant use WINPE2.0 because of our third-party-deployment tool. Is it possible to build a WINPE with a minimum size to have a networkconnection and so on?
I have to do a test in school about it and i musst complete it in the next 2 weeks. Please give me a little help :-/

How can I build the microPE with NETsupport as a bootable iso-image

Posted by thunn - 09-28-07 03:16 - 6 comments
Recently I uploaded a screensaver to the nativepe server and discovered it was being recognized as a script file by wb. It said it was by the boot-land community, the generic descriptor. Actually, I noticed wb handled this extension some time ago but never thought on it until now.

Nuno, can you tell us exactly what file extensions winbuilder will handle as script files? Aside from .txt, is .scr the only other extension we may use for scripts? I seem to remember discovering some other(s) by accident previously but cannot recall what they were, thx.
For now I plan to cab the screensaver as a 'fix', which would leave the file with a .sc_ suffix. That should work.

Posted by carfan - 09-27-07 18:53 - 7 comments
hey nuno:

here is an example of one of your scripts and the variable and shortcut builds:

[variables]
%ProgramTitle%=Example
%ProgramEXE%=example.exe
%ProgramFolder%= Example

[process]
Add_Shortcut,Desktop
Add_Shortcut
unpack

so if i understand this correctly it will build a shortcut on desktop to example.exe. what i would like to do is
and another program within the same folder with a short cut for it. can i just add lines to the variables and
process sections to include the extra shortcuts for the other program??? ex:

[variables]
%ProgramTitle%=Example
%ProgramEXE%=example.exe
%ProgramFolder%= Example
%ProgramTitle%=Example2
%ProgramEXE%=example2.exe
%ProgramFolder%= Example

[process]
Add_Shortcut,Desktop
Add_Shortcut
unpack

> Automatic Dependency Detection/Addition
Posted by rt10k - 09-27-07 15:05 - 16 comments
The Problem

Step 1: Write your app script
Step 2: Build your PE environment (wait several minutes)
Step 3: Wait for qEmu to load up the PE environment (wait several more minutes)
Step 4: Open up that app you just added; Be told "dsound.dll" is missing
Step 5: Add Require_File,"dsound.dll" to your script

Now, repeat that whole process 1 time for every single possibly missing dependency.

A Solution

WinBuilder could detect the dependencies of an app you'd like to add.

If dependencies are not already on the build:
We know the app isn't going to run, so tell the scriptor about it and/or Automatically Require_File,"x.dll" it

I'm a web server on a dialup connection. I don't promote my site, but I give some places some very subtle hints that I have one. It's mainly used by me for remote administration purposes. Lately, I've been receiving quite a number of attacks when I shouldn't even be targeted. It's been especially slow this past week when I've been trying to get very large files off of the Microsoft OEM site. Speeds have been crawling at .6KBs this whole time due to this garbage. I just read my IIS logs. Check it out.

How do I include the VMWare SCSI driver in my ISO? I need it so that it will boot, see the VMW SCSI drive, and then automatically apply a Acronis image. I have everything working except I can't see the drive...

Thanks,
Dave

Blocek is text editor for DOS with unicode support. It means that unlike other DOS editors you are not limited to your current code page. It allows you to edit multilanguage documents, translate texts from one language to another, write modern web pages and so on. Alternatively can be also used as image viewer (BMP, PCX, GIF, PNG, JPG). Current version is v1.32c and has been released on http://www.laaca-mirror.ic.cz/ (0 comments)

Posted by RSS - 09-26-07 14:55 - 0 comments
Jack R. Ellis has released a new version of his UDMA/UDVD Drivers. From the announcement: "UDMA and UDVD now include a device-index code, in their scan of the PCI bus. This lets the drivers "detect" controllers that use identical PCI class/subclass codes. Ivan Li (also in Hong Kong) and Johnson Lam both have Gigabyte K8NF9-Ultra mainboards, using NForce4 chipsets and two SATA controllers. The second SATA controller is now detected on both systems. [...] PCI device indexes for same-class controllers are NOT a very often used feature, and I "Never HEARD of them!", until now!" > Streamlining Script Creation
Posted by rt10k - 09-26-07 13:59 - 3 comments
I've got a few ideas which I think could help improve upon WinBuilder.

1) Use of the SciTE engine for text editing inside WinBuilder ( http://delphisci.sourceforge.net )
* Everybody loves it.
* Its has Text Find, Custom Function Popups, and Custom Text Coloring, built-in

2) When an error occurs
* Let the user know an error occured, and on what line of what file
* Optionally: Bring the user to the line of the file where the error occured

3) A new way to handle scripts
Container File (ZIP file)
|- Script file (Similar to the current script format)
|- "root" directory (Contains files destined to be copied into the root of the app drive)

That "root" directory can be a mirror of what the script writer wants on the final build's app drive.
Everything within "root\WINDOWS" directory will need to be redirected to %TargetDir%\I386.
Everything within "root\Documents and Settings" will need to be copied to the RAMDrive.
The rest ought to be able to just be directly copied to %TargetDir%.

I've attached a file which is an example of this structure (HelloWorld.wb.zip).
That ".wb.zip" part could be what lets people know its a WinBuilder script inside a zip file.
I think keeping it obvious that its a zip file is a good idea in order to make it easier to work with.

With this structure: You could put multiple scripts inside 1 container, very easily.
Say, somebody makes an Nmap script. Somebody else makes a TCPView script. Another person makes a Wireshark script. Somebody else could come put them together, easily, and call it "X's Network Security Package", host it wherever, and, suddenly, the WinBuilder users have a very cool new option and you have a lower bandwidth bill. thumbsup.gif

4) Multi-use comments
Comments can double as status messages during the build process

5) Self-contained APIs
APIs should always use:
* Variables explicitly passed to them
* Variables they make themselves

Unless you're previously aware of the necessary variable settings: APIs with variables not explicitly passed are a pain in the arse.

6) Let the coder see
* Let the coder easily see what arguments a function will accept (SciTE does this with Popup Tooltips)
* Let the coder easily see the values of variables (A hideable bar which lets the coder see the values of vars would be great)

7) Make sure the base APIs are solid, and easily accessible
On the whole, you've done a pretty damn good job of this. The only improvements I can mention are to make it obvious what the arguments to the functions mean.

> KLS now supports WinBuilder
Posted by Colin Finck - 09-26-07 10:31 - 6 comments
Hello,

I just released my PE Builder tool KLS (= Keyboard Layout Selector) in a new version 3.0, which also supports WinBuilder.
My tool allows you to easily add keyboard layouts to a PE system and set a default one. If you added more than one keyboard layout, an easy tool for switching the keyboard layout after boot will also be included.

You can get my tool here: KLS Web page

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

Best regards,

Colin Finck

This is a full version of Acronis TrueImage supplied for customers of Seagate, who also manufacture Maxor hardisks. It is fully licensed and requires no serial number on setup.
I'm working on a theory that it may even work for other manufacturer's harddisks. tongue.gif

Some quick details here:
http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/maxblast.html

or just dl the setup(s)..
direct links ~ TrueImage 10 Oem MaxBlast setup:
http://www.seagate.com/support/maxblast/MaxBlastSetup.en.exe
http://www.seagate.com/support/maxblast/MaxBlastSetup.de.exe
http://www.seagate.com/support/maxblast/MaxBlastSetup.fr.exe
http://www.seagate.com/support/maxblast/MaxBlastSetup.pl.exe
..
..
There is another version known as DiscWizard here:
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?loca...000dd04090aRCRD
..
..
You may notice no real difference between the versions, however..
MaxBlast is currently at v10.0.0.5036
and
DiscWizard is currently 'powered' by TrueImage version10.0.0.5028
The direct links are for the more recent release.

I can put together a script for this to run under winPE later this week. -t

Hallo zusammen,

Bei einem weiteren Versuch kam die Meldung: Windows failed to load because the system registry is missing, or corrupt.

MfG

I have some programs I made scripts for when I was using 050-053 of the project.

What do I need to do to convert them to work properly with 072a ?

When I try to use them I get a BSOD...

Can the PicoXP be built with XP-SP2 sources in any way like I could with the older project ?

Thanks !

I didn't know exactly where this should go if it needs moved, do so.

Ever since we first had a PE boot directly from a ram disk, it was said that this would only work with w2k3 setupldr.bin and ramdisk.sys.

Interestingly, if you take any hex editor and look inside your XP setupldr.bin, you will find lots of strings dealing with loading, reading, writing and different errors for a ..... Ramdisk! ?

Maybe someone, who has dealt with this stuff before should have a second look. ?

I have enough of WinBuilder
I have enough of the forum
I have enough of writing scripts
I have enough of helping people to run their scripts

> Cut window
Posted by online - 09-23-07 18:04 - 15 comments
Hi all,

I'm trying an app script that after some efforts seems to work... but application window appears as cut (please, see screenshots).
Others program windows (pop-up) appear correct: these are smaller than main window and appear correct, but main program window appears as cut at the bottom.

Any idea is much appreciate! cheers.gif

> Exe Dependency Scanner modified for LiveXP
Posted by sLiM - 09-23-07 15:22 - 2 comments
Since this is my first post I would first like to thank all those who support this effort.

Since Exe Scanner seems to work under VISTA I am wondering if anyone has assembled an exclude.txt file for VISTAPE. If so could you please share your findings.

Any input, Pro or Con is welcome. Thanks.

For those who enjoy the hability to type part of the application they want to launch rather that looking over and over again on a long list of installed programs comes a good util: Launchy

Very simple and easy - press ALT+SPACE and a small command prompt appears.

QUOTE
Launchy is a free windows utility designed to help you forget about your start menu, the icons on your desktop, and even your file manager.

Launchy indexes the programs in your start menu and can launch your documents, project files, folders, and bookmarks with just a few keystrokes!

> Suggestion on WB script GUI-element names
Posted by booty#1 - 09-23-07 09:39 - 2 comments
Hi script developer,

in general in all programming languages it is known to be a good coding style using variable names that describe by their name what they are for (e.g. "%ExecuteTime%" instead of "%tx1%"). As WB does not limit variable names this is no problem - just with one exception:

The interface elements. They are usually called "pCheckBox1", "pTextLabel1", "pButton1" and so on.
This makes it sometimes really hard to associate script-functionality to a GUI-element. It would be much easier if a checkbox would be called "pCheckBox_AddStartmenuEntry" or "pTextBox_SourcePath".

First I thought that those names are not supported by WinBuilder but I was wrong - they work!
(@Nuno: Does those names work intentionally or by "accident"? If this works by accident I suggest to promote this functionality to an official WB feature.)

Therefore I strongly recommend using this functionality as it makes scripts easier readable and of course it is a good prevention against mixing-up interface element variables.

Posted by st-dv - 09-22-07 22:56 - 24 comments
Hello,

here my 2nd topic... and sorry for a bad english...

I understood that I can "install" an app with a downloadable and finished script f.e. standard-apps such as firefox etc........

But I have a few Apps that are not more than just an EXE-File (from my portable-apps)........ for them there are no scripts online.....

What do I have to do and write to a script,

1. to copy them to a specific programm-dir......... and

2. to put a shortcut to the startmenu

JUST these two little processes....

I read and tried the script-syntaxes... but i couldnt do it well.......

If anyone could help it would be great.......

Posted by wyzer - 09-22-07 20:21 - 9 comments
Hello, Im sure what Im about to ask may be quite simple, but after searching for a couple of days I am confused on what I really need to do.

I purchased a Dell Optiplex GX270 on Ebay about a year ago and would like to do a reinstall. Knowing how much time and effort this is going to take. I would like to create a restore disk once the computer is set up.

What I want to do is reinstall XP professional (legitimate copy), drivers and as many of my programs that I use on a regular basis that will fit either on a CD or a DVD. Then create a disk that I can boot from to put my system back to this state.

I know people are rolling their eyes, but I really am confused.

Thanks for any help

2: you have to copy the source from "program Files" + "programData" into the destination " ......\antivir\
3: start winbuilder - navigate to the script. there you can activate "virus definition" update or not ( if activated the newest definition's will be downloaded and integrated - nothing to do)
3: ready for iso creating wink.gif

Hints:
1: I've done one entry in regestry to load automaticly avgnt.exe into taskbar. this only available in litestep. i don't know why this not start in. But it's not a Problem. i did a shortcut. (tray tools) start this manually wink.gif
2: there are 2 services. i've configured them to start automaticly - but they don't do that. i'm not sure whats wrong. you have to manually start them: "antivir PersonalEdition Classic Guard" + "Antivir PersonalEdition Classic Planer" the planer must be startet - after starting you can start download wink.gif

Hi,

I just stumbled over a bug in WB 072a: I wanted to add a screenshot to a script via an image-interface-element. If I load a picture into this image (e.g. "AgentRansack2.gif") it is encoded into the script but the image-element is not correctly set:

[Interface]
pImage1=none,1,5,10,40,100,100
