Hi tsetya

My_7PE results are looking very good thumbup.gif

Thanks for publishing your batch program and registry set for making Windows 7 PE
It is interesting to compare with Make_PE3.cmd
and is certainly helpful for me to make further improvements.

*** Update of Make_PE3 package to Create Portable Windows 7 PE ***

  • Added option to make Portable Windows 7 PE without using AIK
Create 7pe_x86.iso from Winre.wim in Recovery folder by using Dism.exe of Windows 7 Source Drive
This approach was earlier found by trizet to be successful
  • WLAN HotFix No longer needed by adding dot3svc Service to registry and extending filelist of needed Windows 7 files

Thanks to trizet aka tsetya for optimizing PE3-SOFTWARE_CLID.reg and for making restricted_clsid.reg
http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/143529-mak...e/page__st__100

Required as Source - 32-bits Installed Windows 7 Drive
32-bits Windows 7 Setup DVD can be used as well as Source, but requires to auto-collect AIK_Tools,
by Running once Make_PE3 in Windows 7 OS or environment with Installed Windows 7 AIK

Make_PE3.exe and Make_PE3.cmd can be used in XP or Windows 7 as OS

Not Required anymore - AIK for Windows 7 - KB3AIK_EN.iso - Microsoft - Windows PE 3.0
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en
Dism.exe of AIK must be version 6.1.7600.16385 (earlier version 7000 gives Errors)

Unfortunately you need to learn by experience, before words in tutorials get their meaning ....

Interesting use of latest WinVBlock.

How does this compare with using latest Firadisk v0.0.1.22 which allows to boot Windows XP in disk image file ?

@maanu
Booting with .wim images is certainly interesting.
At the moment I am focused at booting with Portable Windows 7 PE with pe3_x86.iso boot image of about 200 MB.

@MedEvil
The full XP Image files are not meant to be used as Service OS.
In that case I would prefer to boot with a small ISO (100-200 MB) and from RAMDISK like done with LiveXP or Portable Windows 7 PE.
Universal full XP Image files are interesting for fast (5 min) Restore of Image with XP + PRGS on any computer.
Or they are also interesting to be used e.g. as XP boot option next to Windows 7 on a laptop,
where you don't want to change the partioning and simply install the Image in grub4dos menu and boot from FiraDisk RAMDISK.

@Shao
I agree with all your statements and thank you for your interest in my work.

If my understanding is correct
  • when the image is "universal" because the registry and drivers can cope with many types of hardware,
  • then a USB-HDD can be restored and booted [with all drivers installed] on many machines,
  • but each individual USB-HDD is hardware specific (a USB-HDD restored on machine A wouldn't boot if attached to machine cool.gif

If the Image File is made Universal (contains registry info + drivers for various hardware)
then after Restore on USB-HDD it will be bootable with XP from USB on a lot of machines,
so it is no longer hardware specific (so your last statement was too narrow).

Also you can Restore direct the Universal Image file on primary partition of HDD in computer with any hardware.

Well it's not as simple as that... Anyway my comp does not support USB 2.0 at boot time so it would take ages to load a 2 Gb image into RAM. Plus when you need to make changes or launch a virus sweep on any old computer around, you can't always start by adding more RAM.
It is your own computer on which you want to prepare your Image that needs more RAM.
In that case you can use grub4dos menu on your HDD instead of USB to boot very fast XPRAM_1.img Image from FiraDisk RAMDISK.
So you don't launch the Image from USB and don't need fast boot from USB.
Simply use BOOT_IMG.exe to Install XPRAM_1.img as boot option in grub4dos menu on your HDD.

In using full XP booting from USB on other computers you don't need that amount of RAM.

I have the feeling that you don't need full XP booting from USB at all.
If you are interested in a handy Service solution,
then boot with LiveXP BootSDI.img or with Portable Windows 7 PE pe3_x86.iso Boot Image File from grub4dos menu.
Those Image files are 120-220 MB and provide a perfect PE environment from which you are able to do your Service work.

QUOTE (Doodoo @ Jun 9 2010, 02:22 PM) *
Yes but a USB stick could also be a micro-SD card... Just a lot more convenient to carry around than a HDD. Plus you can even put the micro-SD in your digital camera and it will kill 2 birds with one stone.
The portable 2.5 Inch USB-HDD of 320 GB is easy to carry (no power supply needed) .....

Create + Restore will make USB-HDD bootable only on that (type) machine.
Universal means that you want it to be bootable on various types of hardware (e.g. Intel and AMD)
Therefore you need to boot XP from FiraDisk RAMDISK on those machines.
For each type of machine the registry is then learning how to boot
and you will Update the image file with registry settings and the extra installed drivers.
After this learning you have a Universal image which can be Restored on USB-HDD.

Then you are able to boot with XP from USB-HDD on a lot of machines.

Many thanks for this clarification, wimb ! You're going to think I'm a bit thick, but can I ask a few more details ?

As I said, booting from FiraDisk RAMDISK is not an option for me... Is Create + Restore (or possibly Restore alone) going to create a XP (on USB stick) bootable on any hardware ? (I understand this is not what you mean by "universal", right ?)

Because I have installed the EWF filter, the learning process is naturally going to take place step by step every time I disable the EWF and commit the changes to the USB stick. Does it make sense ?

Get more RAM in your computer allows you to boot from FiraDisk RAMDISK.

Why EWF filter ?
USB-stick is rather slow to boot and work with full XP from USB.

Better is to use USB-harddisk for this purpose (much faster).

Sorry, wimb, I've just realised I made a confusion... ermm.gif

Instead of using IMG_XP_Create to generate XPRAM_1.img then using IMG_XP_Restore, I have directly used IMG_XP_Restore pointing it to the WINDOWS source directory (not to the image). Is that supposed to do the same thing in one go ? (at least, that's what I thought)

OK.

Yes IMG_XP_Restore can do it in one go, but then for XP it is NOT Universal.
The USB registry tweaks will have been made correctly.

For Windows 7 you can do it in one go,
but for XP you need to boot first from FiraDisk RAMDISK with XPRAM_1.img
(so for XP you need Create + Update + Restore)

Get more RAM in your computer solves your problem.

Fair enough, but in this case, please could you explain a bit more what the purpose of IMG_XP_Create is when "install RAMBOOT image" is not ticked ? I thought it was doing the very same job, except, as it says on the tin, it does not create an IMG, and simply happens to copy the WINDOWS source directory (with a few registry tweaks on top, etc...)

Of course I understand that you have NOT enough RAM to boot from FiraDisk RAMDISK.
But just following the described procedure would have Created the XPRAM_1.img file
which you would have Restored on USB by using IMG_XP_Restore.exe

But again, what did you do to get the Windows directory on USB ?
IMG_XP_Create does NOT do that, it will create an Image File XPRAM_1.img

By the way this might explain why I get BSODs when booting from my USB stick. Because I don't have enough RAM to create an IMG and then boot it from FiraDisk RAMDISK, I don't use IMG_XP_Create first and IMG_XP_Restore next, but I only use IMG_XP_Create to make a direct copy of the the source WINDOWS directory onto my USB stick with a few tweaks on the fly (i.e. I don't tick "install RAMBOOT image").

That explains a lot.
It means that you did NOT follow the described correct procedure of section 2 in
http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=23553

IMG_XP_Create does NOT make a direct copy of the the source WINDOWS directory onto your USB stick.
IMG_XP_Create makes XPRAM_1.img Image file which can also be installed as boot option in grub4dos menu.
You must have done wrongly something else to get the source WINDOWS directory onto your USB stick. scared9.gif

You should use IMG_XP_Restore to restore XP on USB. cheers.gif

Same procedure as above, except prior to installation, XP is slipstreamed with Mass Storage drivers in text mode from DriverPack.net.
Now the USB stick won't even boot on the desktop PC where the image was created (BSOD 07B

Try first to make small Image of about 1.4 GB (only install XP + slipstreamed MassStorage drivers) so that you
are able to boot it from FiraDisk RAMDISK using grub4dos menu on your HDD.
About 3 minutes after booting, the drivers will have been silently installed (check in device manager).
Then Update your Image and use that file to Restore on USB.

In this way you keep it first simple and have more chance that XP will boot from USB.

Also boot first with Image from FiraDisk RAMDISK on other computer and use same procedure to make it Universal.

Thanks smile.gif
I installed guest OS from a customized xp ISO. This ISO was an nlite'd Onepiece pack (lotsa hotfixes and applications) and other addon packs.

What I didn't do when customizing that image for guest OS was integrating mass storage. sad.gif
Is there any way to create universal image from this VMware image?
Or should I create another slipstreamed image+mass storage drvivers and install it again on VMware?

For now just give it a try.
Later you can do the other approach.

Please correct me if I'm wrong:
Should I install FiraDisk in running OS (HOST)?
Or should I install it in guest OS (which is shut down) and I'm gonna create ghost image from?

I installed FiraDisk on host.

That is the solution, you installed FiraDisk on wrong drive.

FiraDisk must be installed in the drive that you are going to image.
Remember you want to boot the Image from FiraDisk RAMDISK, so FiraDisk driver must be inside the Image.
So before shut down you have to install FiraDisk and ImDisk.

Source Drive (Z:\Windows ): a mapped VMware NTFS partition.

Check manually with Windows Explorer if you can find file
Z:\Windows\system32\drivers\firadisk.sys

That is the file that IMG_XP_Create is trying to find.
I don't know why the file is not found.
May be because it is a mapped VMware NTFS partition, instead of a real drive.

You can try to press Yes and Continue to create the image.

And you can try to use IMG_XP_Create to image a real drive.

.... i cannot start the network automatically via

wpeutil InitializeNetwork

I have the same problem in pe3_x86.iso made with Make_PE3 package.

But there is a solution for autostart of Network, instead of using PENetwork that will also solve the problem.

I have made a batch program driver_fix.cmd that is auto launched by startnet.cmd
Next Update of Make_PE3 later this week will contain these batch programs .....

wpeinit.exe in startnet will initialize the network
network drivers are auto installed with drvload.exe
WLAN Service can be started with the given commands

LAN Internet is working but for WLAN Connect and Authentication you still need to use PENetwork.exe

startnet.cmd
CODE

wpeinit

2) I booted the XP image on the notebook, plugged in the USB-HDD(it was detected), run IMG_XP_Update and restored the image to USB. I still get the 0x07B error. Why?

Try first plug-in USB-HDD and then boot with XPRAM_1.img into FiraDisk RAMDISK.
Check in Device Manager that all devices are installed OK.
Then run IMG_XP_Update to Update XPRAM_1.img
Then Restore XPRAM_1.img on USB-HDD using IMG_XP_Restore.exe
Then Reboot from USB-HDD

If still no succes, try to use different USB-HDD
Not every USB-HDD is really Plug and Play

I have no answer for the third question, may be you find something ....
