You need to read more carefully wink.gif

The link talks about up to 99 XP/2000/2003 Windows in the same partition, one Vista/7/Server2008 in each partition, also /BartPE/WinFLPC etc. etc, Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu/PartedMagic, any kind of other type booting off SysLinux etc. etc.
Seems a bit more than one OS, isn't it?

You can easily make multiboot USB flash with a lot of software on it:

Interesting...

Grub4dos download links:
http://diddy.boot-land.net/grub4dos/files/links.htm
http://code.google.com/p/grub4dos-chenall/downloads/list
http://nufans.net/grub4dos/tinybit/

Grub4dos guide:
http://diddy.boot-land.net/grub4dos/Grub4dos.htm

I guess the file is grldr, not grub, you need only it from the zip files in the links above.

However, I don't think it's grub4dos version the issue, but what else it could be unsure.gif

And again, for the record, the "tutorial" is not mine, credits go where they belong to, I only posted a link to it.

How exactly to you launch it? Where is the ISO file, did you rename it, what are contents of menu.lst, what grub4dos version are you using?

By the way – my motherboard only supports USB-1.1 speed at boot time – which means loading to RAM takes a loooong time
Do not load in RAM, defragment your ISO if needed to be able to load it NOT using --mem option in grub4dos map command.
The line:
CODE
map /rescue/rescue.iso (0xff) || map --mem /rescue/rescue.iso (0xff)
will attempt to load the ISO NOT in RAM first and ONLY if fails (fragmented file for example) will load in fully in RAM.

- but I can use plop to activate USB-2 at boot time as option wink.gif
Can you try without PLoP?

Great that you managed to get Kaspersky Rescue Disk 2010 up and run using the “free lunch”-alternative – because I don’t dry.gif
And further more – I cannot use FAT32 as file-system – must use NTFS.

If using the “free lunch”-alternative (map ISO as it is) and only have file “livecd” on the root of USB, I always have problem that knoppix can't find “image.squashfs” mad.gif

Note: I have tested this to USB stick and to a USB harddrive same problem occurs. But using method I mentioned, it always works for me – so it’s no big deal cheers.gif

Regards balder

I have just tested and followed the linked instructions to the letter. Empty liveusb file in root and rescue folder with the renamed to rescue.iso file inside, on 2GB USB stick.

In both FAT32 and NTFS everything went smoothly. Updated databases and scanned a directory on NTFS partition.

No idea what is going wrong in your case.

You could do drive letter-->disk/partition numbers easily in AutoIt using WMI:

http://www.autoitscript.com/forum/index.ph...mp;#entry632718
http://www.autoitscript.com/forum/index.ph...mp;#entry427834

Also:
http://blogs.technet.com/heyscriptingguy/a...ical-disks.aspx

If you search msdn.microsoft.com for Win32_LogicalDisk, Win32_DiskDrive you will see number of other useful parameters.

Does WinNTSetup use d1 = path in section Directories in DOSNET.INF?

Just had to test with Windows 2000, which uses d1 = \ rather that d1 = \I386 in XP and later.
Ended up with nearly empty ~BT folder. Changed d1 = \I386 in dosnet.inf and everything went smoothly.
As far as I remember this was the only difference in DOSNET.INF when parsing it for such purpose.

Find the appropriate WinSetupFromUSB.log file in program directory or in \backups\ subfolder and attach it with your reply. You may need to zip/rar it first.

Since you are not responding the questions about driver integration I'd assume that issue should be ignored.

What version of the program did you use? Have you tried the latest 1.0 beta6?

How do you integrate your drivers? Have you tried BTS mass storage driver pack?
http://driverpacks.net/

Why are you posting in grub4dos subforum? Your problem has nothing to do with grub4dos...
Why aren't you posting in msfn.org, where the program is supported?

...I was thinking something like below

title Boot Drive 0
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

looks like this is working but fails OS installs...

Try correcting it to something like:

CODE
title Boot Drive 0
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
map --hook
rootnoverify (hd0)
chainloader (hd0)+1

It could be modified in case of 2 or more internal disks, but there is a glitch - some BIOSes take into account HD boot order, so when booted from USB, HD1 is the first internal disk according to HD boot order.
Other BIOSes do NOT take that into account, so numeration could be according to their connection, e.g. on SATA port 1,2 etc., ignoring what HD boot order is.

Thanks for clarify.

What about a display change:
CODE
ls /casper/initrd.gz && initrd /casper/initrd.gz
ls /casper/initrd.lz && initrd /casper/initrd.lz

ls display /casper/initrd.gz at ubuntu 8.
ls display /casper/initrd.lz at ubuntu 9.
That way the used initrd file is displayed.

Good idea, thanks smile.gif

Thanks, that helped. It turns out to be the particular versions I've tested.

http://nufans.net/grub4dos/
0.4.4-2009-06-20 --> ok
0.4.4-2009-03-21 --> ok
0.4.4-2009-10-16 --> ok
Chenall's :
http://nufans.net/grub4dos/chenall/
0.4.4-2009-11-10 --> ok
0.4.5-2009-12-23 --> ok

http://nufans.net/grub4dos/tinybit/
0.4.5a-2010-03-14 --> ok

http://code.google.com/p/grub4dos-chenall/updates/list
0.4.5a-2010-03-14 --> ok
0.4.5a-2010-03-11 --> not ok
0.4.5a-2010-02-09 --> not ok
0.4.5a-2010-01-23 --> ok

I must have messed up something else, since I remember testing stable versions as well, anyway, all is good now, hopefully this helps a bit grub4dos developers to track down what was broken up in a few versions, if not already known.

If autocompletion works, it may scared9.gif mean that somehow the "dot" in initrd.gz is not a "dot"! dubbio.gif

Or that there is a hidden space in the name? w00t.gif

Nothing weird in the filenames, seems like bug or unexpected behavior of grub4dos.

It is normal that [TAB] autocompletion does not work if the drive is not already root.

/cas[TAB] autocompletes properly, however, the autocompleted "find --set-root /casper/initrd.gz" returns "Error 15: file not found" wink.gif

Version is this:
http://grub4dos-chenall.googlecode.com/fil...-2010-02-09.zip
I've also tried 2009-10-16 and 2009-03-26. Currently playing with http://grub4dos-chenall.googlecode.com/fil...-2010-03-11.zip

After root (0xff) auto completion of
kernel /casper/vm [TAB]
and
initrd /casper/init [TAB]

works. However, find /casper/initrd.gz still returns "not found" wacko.gif

"find --set-root /casper/initrd.gz" apparently does not search in the mapped ISO, returns "Error 15: file not found", so does auto completion while typing
find --set-root /cas[TAB] if there was no "root (0xff)".

Same happens with map --mem .... and QEMU with 800MB RAM.

Trying to make an "universal" entry for Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu versions from 8.04 till 9.10 and need some help.
Initrd file could be either /casper/initrd.lz for 9.10 or /casper/initrd.gz for older versions. Need to load whichever is present in /casper/.

Here is the first glitch- why initrd.gz is not found?

Next tried with this, don't get tricked by filenames, the screenshot above is for 9.04 rest is for 9.10.

CODE
title Start ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386 LIVE from partition 0
map --unmap=0:0xff
map --unhook
root (hd0,0)
map /ubuntu/ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso (0xff) || map --mem /UBUNTU/ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso (0xff)
map --hook
root (0xff)
kernel /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/UBUNTU/ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso quiet splash --
ls /casper/initrd.lz && initrd /casper/initrd.lz
ls /casper/initrd.lz || initrd /casper/initrd.gz
map --unmap=0:0xff
Result is "file not found, press any key to continue" message and back to main menu.

Next attempt:
CODE
title Start ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386 LIVE from partition 0
map --unmap=0:0xff
map --unhook
root (hd0,0)
map /ubuntu/ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso (0xff) || map --mem /UBUNTU/ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso (0xff)
map --hook
root (0xff)
kernel /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/UBUNTU/ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso quiet splash --
errorcheck off
ls /casper/initrd.lz && initrd /casper/initrd.lz
ls /casper/initrd.lz || initrd /casper/initrd.gz
errorcheck on
map --unmap=0:0xff
- Ubuntu starts, but initrd file is not loaded, resulting in kernel panic.

CODE
initrd /casper/initrd.gz || initrd /casper/initrd.lz
also didn't work loading /casper/initrd.lz
but
CODE
initrd /casper/initrd.lz || initrd /casper/initrd.gz
loaded /casper/initrd.lz :

Ended up with
CODE
title Start ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386 LIVE from partition 0
map --unmap=0:0xff
map --unhook
root (hd0,0)
map /ubuntu/ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso (0xff) || map --mem /UBUNTU/ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso (0xff)
map --hook
root (0xff)
kernel /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/UBUNTU/ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso quiet splash --
errorcheck off
initrd /casper/initrd.lz
initrd /casper/initrd.gz
errorcheck on
map --unmap=0:0xff
which I have doubts how correct is.

What am I doing wrong?

Writing syslinux bootsector as a file (to be chainloaded by ntldr/grldr for example) may also be an useful option to consider:
