Hello everybody,
I'm going to release a new project PWBoot today.

So, what is PWBoot project ?
PWBoot stands for Portable Windows Boot project, this project aims to be make your Windows operating system to boot from USB storage media easily.

Supported platforms: Windows version 6.0+ (Vista or higher).

Tested storage type:
  • USB Flash
    1. Kingston DataTraveler 100 (8GB)
    2. Sandisk Cruzer Extreme (16GB)
    3. Apacer Handy Steno AH328 (8GB)

  • USB HDD
    1. Standard 2.5 inch IDE HDD (60GB)
    2. Standard 2.5 inch SATA HDD (120GB)
    3. Standard 3.5 inch IDE HDD (40GB)
    4. Seagate FreeAgent Go (320GB)


Worked boot methods:
- VHD boot
- Native boot

Tested working list:
- Windows Vista (SP: 0, 1, 2)
- Windows 7 (Beta, RC, RTM)


Important!
  • You do not have to use other USB booting program such as USB Watcher.
  • Remember to re-patch after a new service pack updates installed.


Optimization Tips
  • Use HDD instead of FDD.
  • Turn off indexing service.
  • Use DiskMod for enable pagefile on USB (Windows 7+).
  • Defragment the disk.
  • NTFS compression.

Version 1.1:
- Core improvement
- Main GUI changes

Version 2.0
- New GUI
- Minor improvements
- Support External system patching (Not fully tested)

Version 2.1 *New*
- Minor improvements
- Fixed: External system patching doesn't work

Upcoming release:
Version 3, will introduce some new features to eliminate troublesome procedure and new user interface.

One suggestion: Why not automate the rest of the process using diskpart to create the bootable USB pendisk and copying the windows folder onto the pendisk with one click as well?

Hmm, this project are designed to use on the existing Windows installation.
I also found that if just copy the entire system contents to an USB storage(and apply boot sector) will fail to boot, unless using disk cloning.

Yes, it was designed for portability as long as the boot machine is compatible.

lol! I did the same thing. Untill I said it wouldnt hurt to try the big zip icon on the left.

Most probably the only thing needed is HD signature in the MBR cloned unsure.gif
