My NT knowledge is limited to unattended installs at this time, no idea what you PE builders are talking about (IMG:http://www.boot-land.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Nice find: CMD.EXE for Win9x
Hi y'all,

just passing another great find along: Win95Cmd - an official Win9x-compatible version of CMD.EXE from Microsoft, even if somewhat beta.
Ive heared it supports command extensions with a few exceptions, but in my tests i havent found anything missing.
Limitations: Scrolling didnt work for me, as well as fimename completion, and it can only safely exited with typing exit, not closing window. Of course it doesnt match the processing speed of command.com.
The first 2 could actually be registry settings, i will look into this.
Sadly, its not HX-DOS compatible, so Windows GUI is required.

If you have problems with pipes: It references %COMSPEC% to walk through pipes (IMG:http://www.boot-land.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/confused1.gif) , so it should be set to Win95Cmd at runtime (Win95Cmd /K SET COMSPEC=..). (Another unique MS workaround (IMG:http://www.boot-land.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) )

Download with different versions: http://cygutils.fruitbat.org/consize/

Edit: Reg-file to integrate it
CODE
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor]
"AutoRun"="SET COMSPEC=C:\\WINDOWS\\Win95Cmd.exe"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\.cmd]
@="cmdfile"

FYI: Couldnt get the original NT CMD.EXE to work even with the KernelEx project. (I know i was foolish to even try (IMG:http://www.boot-land.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) )

Setting Registry pointer / Registry redirector
Hi all, i have very good news! (IMG:http://www.boot-land.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/cheers.gif)

By accident i found this lovely little tool, that works exactly like the mysterious Qualystem registry redirector, on this german site:
WinFAQ #1826 - look for a download link for SETREG.COM

CODE
Usage:
SETREG.COM X:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.DAT
even SETREG.COM X:\SYSTEM.DAT
(will find USER.DAT in the same dir)

This method allows to use:Ive been testing it successfully in MS-DOS, and its specifically for other DOS-variants too.
Dont thank me, praise the creator of this tool (IMG:http://www.boot-land.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/thumbup.gif)

CD-run Win9x: Access CD drive in Explorer
Hello boot CD fanatics,

this one is only loosely related to Mindows, since it is a common problem but present in Mindows as well:

I have an MS-DOS based El Torito boot CD, with BootGUI=0 in my msdos.sys, so starting Windows is optional.
My Windows can be loaded either directly from the CD, or from a copy in Ram Drive.
The CD is mounted with SHSUCDX, wich works fine on a HDD-based Windows - it just makes CD access fall back to DOS compability mode.

Booted with El Torito however, accessing the CD drive in Explorer triggers an EXPLORER page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL (IMG:http://www.boot-land.net/forums/style_emoticons/default/confused1.gif)
Some guides on the net mention problems with the ESDI_506.PDR 32-bit disk driver, but i have found only the floppy driver HSFLOP.PDR cant handle El Torito emulation, deleting it makes everything else work.

This problem is present in all Mini-Win9x variants booted from CD ive seen so far, even in safe mode.

Does anyone know a way around this?
Solved: With the help of my friend jaclaz (thanks again): Solution past post #9, and a way better one at #25.

Greetings,
Flo

A call to DOS FireWire storage users
Hello dear diskette collectors,

if you happen to have FireWire storage devices (i dont) please read on:

While creating the newest installment of my DOS emergency boot CD i stumbled upon 2 driver disks for FireWire 1394 storage devices, one being the among USB fans famous DAToptic package and the lesser known Iomega solution.

The ASPI standard consists of 2 config.sys devices, the hardware driver (i.e. aspi2dos.sys) and the allocator (i.e. aspicd.sys), wich to my knowledge can be mixed between vendors.

So while looking at the drivers with a text editor (im not a hacker) it seems that each company supports only its own devices, but each on a different part of the 2 drivers!

DAT.exe
  • sbp2aspi.sys <- "SUPPORT LIST" indicated properitary solution
  • nj32disk.sys <- works fine with generic usb
iomega_usb_firewire_dos_driver_boot_disk.ZIP
  • aspi1394.sys <- seems to be clean
  • guest.exe <- again, a support list Not! See last post
Even a blind man should see where im going now.
Any of you tried mixing? (probably not) Want to try now? (please do)

I know im wasting too much effort on an exotic interface, though Mac people might want to disagree.

Eagerly waiting for feedback,
Flo

PS: If this is the wrong place for so technical questions, please refer me to a better one.
