I wanted to edit files on a network location just as if they were files on my machine under Ubuntu to allow editing a website and seeing the changes "on-the-fly".

The solution presented itself as SSHFS, a secure network file system that keeps privacy on the data exchange.

I was also using Kompozer for web authoring but the file system feature allows many more features.

Very easy to set up from command line.

There is a good tutorial here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SSHFS

Good suggestion!

I had been looking for a GUI to use SSHFS but didn't stumbled on anything relevant so I also added your link onto the wiki page for SSHFS in the hope it helps more people finding it.
